A judge on Friday denied a bid by Barry Bonds' lawyers to block the authors and publishers from making money on a book claiming the San Francisco Giants slugger used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds' attorneys sued the book's authors, publisher Gotham Books, the San Francisco Chronicle and Sports Illustrated, which published excerpts of the book, saying they should be held liable for publishing "illegally obtained grand jury transcripts." They sought a temporary restraining order on all profits from the book. Judge James Warren denied that request. The lawsuit stands, although the judge said he thought it had little...

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- Beginning in 1998 with injections in his buttocks of Winstrol, a powerful steroid, Barry Bonds took a wide array of performance-enhancing drugs over at least five seasons in a massive doping regimen that grew more sophisticated as the years went on, according to Game of Shadows, a book written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters at the forefront of reporting on the BALCO steroid distribution scandal. The authors, Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, describe in sometimes day-to-day, drug-by-drug detail how often and how deeply Bonds engaged in the persistent doping. For instance, the authors write that...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Barry Bonds used a vast array of performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids and human growth hormone, for at least five seasons beginning in 1998, according to a book written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters. An excerpt of "Game of Shadows," which provides details of the San Francisco slugger's extensive doping program, appears in the March 13 issue of Sports Illustrated. Bonds, who testified before a San Francisco federal grand jury looking into steroid use by top athletes, repeatedly has denied using performance-enhancing drugs. Phone messages left by The Associated Press seeking comment from his attorney and...

MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- Sammy Sosa was once one of baseball's most popular figures, a prodigious home run hitter who raced enthusiastically to his position and tapped his heart to salute adoring fans in the Wrigley Field bleachers. Now one season after his bitter departure from the Chicago Cubs, the 37-year-old Sosa is probably headed to retirement, his days of circling the bases over. If that is the case, he leaves behind a conflicting legacy. "I imagine it's frustrating when you get to this point in your career and you can't get a guaranteed contract. I can't imagine what that...

Police in Peru have launched a campaign to save frogs from being turned into an aphrodisiac drink. 'Frogshake' is popular among native Peruvians as a stimulant that enhances male sexual performance. Police saved 4,000 frogs from being juiced to make the drink in a raid on a warehouse in Lima. Terra Noticias Populares reports the frogs were packed in boxes and were about to be liquidised. But they have now released the animals into a nature reserve. A police spokesman said: "It is our new crusade, to save the frogs from those juice-makers!"
