WASHINGTON — A white powder found in a package opened at John Kerry's presidential campaign headquarters Thursday was harmless and could have been garlic powder, authorities said of an apparent hoax that forced police to seal off the building. "It appears to be some kind of garlic powder, commonly used for seasoning foods," said Alan Etter, a spokesman for the Washington, D.C., Fire Department. The package, containing two letter-sized envelopes, was turned over to the FBI for further investigation.

Police sealed off the office building that houses Sen. John Kerry's headquarters on Thursday after a package with white powder was opened by campaign staff. Kerry, D-Mass., and his vice presidential running mate, Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., were hundreds of miles away, campaigning their way toward next week's Democratic National Convention. Bake Sale Bandits: On April 17 in Washington, in a humorous attempt to combat nationwide MoveOn.org bake sales in support of John Kerry, Kristinn Taylor of the D.C. chapter of Free Republic organized a different kind of bake sale. While MoveOn.org portrayed Kerry as a "man of the people," Taylor's "Viet Cong Vets for Kerry" sale informed the public about Kerry's betrayal of Americans during the Vietnam War. Police told a group of conservatives affiliated with FreeRepublic.com to cease a mock bake sale they held in front of John Kerry’s D.C. campaign headquarters last weekend. The small, pro-Bush rally was held to counter MoveOn.org’s “Bake Back the White House” bake sale last weekend, which the liberal organization claims brought in $250,000 from 1,000 bake sales around the country. The proceeds will help fund anti-Bush ads. The DC Chapter of Free Republic set up a Viet-Cong Vets for Kerry bake sale in front of Democrat Presidential candidate John Kerry's national headquarters in Washington DC this afternoon.
