CHATHAM, Mass. — It’s known as the unofficial end to summer, but on Labor Day weekend, peak shark season is just getting started. With the beautiful weather expected all day Monday, beach safety officials are warning that swimmers need to be vigilant, especially with a reduced number of lifeguards monitoring the public beaches. “It just keeps building and building, and now we have the most numbers that we have all summer long,” said Tony Pike, Beach Safety Director at Nauset Beach in Orleans. According to Pike, white sharks have been pinging sensors off the coast almost non-stop. “We’re starting to...

The FReeper Canteen Presents... Happy Labor Day! September 7, 2020 HISTORY Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September....

Dr. Anthony Fauci is strongly urging everyone to follow the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recommended guidance during Labor Day Weekend. While the entire country is at risk of repeating the surge of cases following previous holiday weekends such as Memorial Day and July 4th, residents of seven states in particular, which are currently experiencing upticks in cases, need to be extremely vigilant. “There are several states that are at risk for surging, namely North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Arkansas, Missouri, Indiana, Illinois,” Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said in...

White House coronavirus advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Wednesday that the number of daily coronavirus cases in the United States is “unacceptably high” heading into the fall season. The U.S. is seeing roughly 40,000 new cases a day, but it needs to bring infections below 10,000, Fauci said during an interview with MSNBC. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the public’s behavior over the Labor Day holiday weekend will determine how the coronavirus spreads in the U.S. through the colder months.

SANTA CRUZ — Beach closures are coming back to Santa Cruz County for Labor Day weekend as officials decide to take another crack at keeping crowds off the sand. Beaches will be closed from 5 a.m. Sept. 5, to 5 p.m. Sept. 7 — except for an open period from 4-8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The closures come under an emergency regulation unanimously approved by county supervisors Tuesday. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office plans to increase patrols and “proactively” enforce the closures, according to spokeswoman Ashley Keehn. Compared to the prior closures, Keehn said the additional clarity around when...

A bar on Long Island is in hot water after it reportedly took bets on shooting deaths in New York City and Chicago. The Cliffton on East Main Street in Patchogue created a gambling pool on which city would see the most shooting deaths over the Labor Day holiday weekend, with the winner offered a cash prize, according to Newsday. “Let the shooting sprees begin!” the bar reportedly posted to Instagram last week along with a photo of a Super Bowl-style betting box. Officials have since expressed outrage over the gambling pool. …

After the 9/11 attacks, we began to hear that cliche about how “the terrorists will have won” if we let ourselves become so consumed with fear that we no longer act rationally. Well, the future is now. That’s my reaction to that decision to cancel the annual Labor Day parade in South Plainfield because a guy left some fireworks in a bar in Sea Bright. When I got an email from the Governor’s Office Monday morning saying this year’s parade had been canceled, I figured it might be because of the weather. -snip- Nope. It soon turned out that the...

LABOR DAY To appreciate it, one needs to know the history preceding it. At the time the United States was founded, most people were farmers or worked in trades, such as blacksmiths, cobblers, bakers, upholsterers, etc. Then, the Industrial Revolution began when the Scottish inventor James Watt developed a steam engine to pump water out of coal mines. Steam and water were soon harnessed in the early 19th century to power pumps, railroads, ships, and factories, which mass produced products, such as textiles. This led to the creation of factories which could mass produce items inexpensively. Originally, there was no...

I know it’s nice to have warning in order to prepare, but for our friends in Florida, Georgia, South – and now North – Carolina, along with their anxious relatives elsewhere, in must seem as if they’ve been waiting on Dorian for a month now. Being caught in a real life Groundhog Day is exhausting. To all who find themselves in the path of the storm, I’m certain your fellow MOTI will keep you in their prayers. So for today’s diversion I’m just going to assemble my panzanella salad for you. I made this last Friday, when the weather was perfect...

It will be a day at the beach for President Trump’s re-election campaign on Labor Day. The campaign is taking to the skies on Labor Day to fly banners over beach-goers to show its thanks for workers fueling the economy. “Labor Day is the perfect time to thank American workers for everything they do for our country,” said Tim Murtaugh, Trump campaign communications director. “Under President Trump’s policies, the economy is strong and growing, and more Americans are working than ever before. The American economy is the envy of the world and our American workers are the best on the...

Even over a holiday weekend the Wall Street Journal delivers a little something rant worthy, even if it’s only a drink recipe. Now you would think that something as prosaic as a daiquiri would be non-controversial. And you’re probably thinking that, like a liberal, I’m going out of my way to be offended. You be the judge. It doesn’t bother me that the recipe is not for the classic daiquiri, but rather one that Jimmy Buffet would call a “frozen concoction.” The fact that it is made with an immersion blender instead of the standard bar issue Waring blender is also...

Something usually not discussed on Labor Day weekend is the violence and thuggery which has always been part of the union movement. And it still happens. The history of the labor movement in the U.S. is littered with extremists who use violence to get their way. At the beginning of the union movement, the violence was outer-directed; toward the government, management, or the police who were using violence themselves to destroy the labor movement. As the movement matured, the abuse became directed inward, targeted towards keeping the rank and file “in line,” going after replacement workers, or sabotaging the particular...

Here it is Sunday on the last holiday weekend of the summer and it looks like we are going to enjoy another 6 weeks of summer as the Wolverines won their opener against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders. If the way they won is any indication though it could well be an ugly 6 weeks. Indeed, as I speak, Dorian continues its march to wreak havoc on landfall somewhere yet to be determined. And slowly I’m coming to the realization that, once again, I forgot all about Burning Man, the week-long hedonistic celebration dedicated to anti-consumerism and self-expression. Sadly for “Burners”...

This Monday marks Labor Day, a time when we transition from summer to fall, schools begin and football moves from preseason to regular season. For me, a southerner, it also is the time to store my white shoes and handbags and to pull out my fall clothes -- as soon as the temperatures drop. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. It had nothing to do with sales, shoes or football. Instead, it involved more than10,000 people who had taken an unpaid day from work and marched from City Hall to Union Square...
