by Brian Hayes | Top Right News Two days, two victories for opponents of illegal immigration in the state of Nebraska. Just yesterday TRN reported on the landslide victory in a Fremont, NE vote to bar illegal aliens from being able to rent housing. Today, a federal judge threw out a lawsuit challenging Nebraska’s authority to deny driver’s licenses to illegal aliens who have received temporary authorization to live and work in the United States by Barack Obama. The ruling could have a major impact across the nation as states come under well-funded pressure to hand licenses to illegals under...

PHOENIX - Under a new state law signed by Gov. Jan Brewer, military experience will count toward a commercial driver's license or a nursing license. "Veterans already have their training. They've done emergency operations under fire. They're used to the high stress environment," said the law's author, Rep. Sonny Borrelli, a Lake Havasu City Republican who served 20 years in the Marines. As they transition from military to civilian life, veterans can face a lot of "redundant training" to get a state license for something they were trained to do in the military, Borrelli said. When the law goes into...

A bill to allow undocumented immigrants to obtain an Illinois driver’s license passed the Illinois Senate today by a vote of 41 to 14. One Democrat voted “present.” The bill is SB957. The 10 Republicans who joined the Democrats in rewarding non-citizens who are already breaking our laws, were: Bill Brady (Sponsor), Kirk Dillard, Tom Johnson, John Millner (Sponsor), Matt Murphy, Carole Pankau, Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (Sponsor), Sue Rezin, Ron Sandack (Sponsor), and Suzi Schmidt. Two Republicans, Pamela Althoff and Dale Righter, took the ultimate lily-livered approach and just didn’t vote on the bill. That’s as bad as...

Top Illinois state officials said Tuesday they’ll push to issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants — a move backed also by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who for years stood as Democrats’ key impediment to pushing immigration in Congress. State Senate President John Cullerton said he’ll try to pass a bill in the legislature’s veto session next week to remove restrictions on illegal immigrants getting licenses there, and Gov. Pat Quinn said he’ll sign it, if it reaches his desk. Both men are Democrats. The move represents pushback after a decade in which states went the other direction, putting tighter restrictions...

The push to ban driver's licenses for illegal immigrants appears to be gaining some momentum with the legislature's 30 day session starting in just two weeks. Governor Susana Martinez is picking up some support for her crusade against the licenses, but she appears to be losing a vote too. Some Democrats are moving into the "undecided" category. Sen. Steve Fischmann, a Dona Ana County Democrat, is switching to the governor's side, saying he will vote with her because that is what the vast majority of people in hid district want.

SANTA ANA – The question of how Latino this city's identity is, or should be, keeps cropping up, creating a bit of a minefield for the all-Latino City Council. One area of contention has been the city's downtown shopping district, on East Fourth Street, where some Latino merchants have complained they feel they are being pushed out in a gentrification move. The removal of a merry-go-round that had attracted Latino families to the Fiesta Marketplace plaza at Fourth and Spurgeon streets has symbolized what some see as an agenda to make the downtown more appealing to people of other ethnicities.This...

The last three states to allow illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses -- Washington, New Mexico and Utah -- are now steeped in battles to revise their laws as a federal deadline approaches for all 50 states to issue identity cards that meet a new national standard. States must be in compliance by May with the regulations laid out in the 2005 REAL ID Act. The law, a recommendation of the Sept. 11 commission that investigated the 2001 terror attacks, creates a national security standard for state-issued identification cards to be used for purposes like boarding airplanes and entering federal...

BURIEN, Wash. – Carlos Hernandez packed up his family and left Arizona after the state passed its sweeping immigration crackdown. The illegal immigrant's new home outside Seattle offered something Arizona could not: a driver's license. Three states — Washington, New Mexico and Utah — allow illegal immigrants to get licenses because their laws do not require proof of citizenship or legal residency. An Associated Press analysis found that those states have seen a surge in immigrants seeking IDs in recent months, a trend experts attribute to crackdowns on illegal immigration in Arizona and elsewhere. "It's difficult being undocumented and not...
