Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri fired four law enforcement officers after they were found to have shirked their duties while on the clock. One said he watched a movie while on duty. Two others were suspended. Claiming they intentionally hid from supervisors, Gualtieri fired three deputies and one sergeant for failure to work during their assigned shifts. An investigation revealed that the deputies responded to calls if dispatched, but did not initiate any law enforcement action for hours at a time. They concealed their cruisers, disconnected the GPS, and left assigned areas in order to go home, visit family, or...

The now-criminal investigation of NYC sanitation workers for allegedly delaying slowing snow removal is picking up steam. A video obtained by CBS-2 shows snowplows driving through Queens on the night of the blizzard with plows raised. Other pictures and reports show workers napping on the job, drinking beer, and spending 11 hours at a Dunkin Donuts. All of this evidence has been submitted to prosecutors who are looking into criminal wrongdoing. We're waiting for someone to get fired. See the CBS video here

St. Paul employees targeted for discipline following allegations they were loafing on the job instead of filling potholes are getting less-harsh penalties than the city had initially announced, records show. Of the 59 days of suspension the city announced against 17 workers in May, a mere five days of suspension-without-pay have actually been served, according to city records, which are not being released for all 17 workers because the process isn't over. In May, Mayor Chris Coleman made the announcement, billed as the largest disciplinary action in the city's history, following a flap when TV cameras in March filmed pothole-patching...

Woo hoo! I've made the big time. Last month, the website Free Republic featured a thread about my Nov. 18 column, "Queers Who Don't Act Right." You probably don't know much about Free Republic unless you are a right-wing lunatic. Free Republic is so far right that wing-nut gay muckraker Matt Drudge and Lucianne Goldberg, one of the architects of the Clinton-Monica Lewinsky brouhaha, both left the site in 1999 because it was too extreme, even for them. In the years since, the site has become the contemporary version of a marathon meeting of the old John Birch Society and...

LONDON -- It is the news that all sloths have been waiting for. Scientists in Germany have found that too much exercise is bad for you, and that doing less could lengthen your life. In a new book called The Joy of Laziness: How to Slow Down and Live Longer, Dr. Peter Axt, retired professor of health science at Fulda University near Frankfurt, and his daughter, Dr. Michaela Axt-Gadermann, a general practioner, say that everybody has a limited amount of "life energy" and that the speed with which it is consumed determines their life span. They argue that high-energy activities,...
