Hurricane Lorena neared Mexico's resort-studded Los Cabos area Friday as owners pulled their boats from the water, tourists hunkered down in hotels, and police and soldiers went through low-lying, low-income neighborhoods urging people to evacuate. Lorena was forecast to pass over or near the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula Friday afternoon with heavy winds and soaking rains, and locals who have been through past hurricanes were taking no chances. "If we don't get the yacht out, the waves can damage it," said Juan Hernández, who rents his craft to foreign visitors. It's "a preventative measure for when a...

Damaso Lopez, known by the nickname "El Licenciado" — a title for college graduates. Lopez was long considered Guzman's right-hand man and helped him escape from a Mexican prison in 2001. Lopez, 51, is believed to have been locked in a dispute with Guzman's sons for control of the cartel's territories. The head of Mexico's federal detectives' agency, Omar Garcia Harfuch, said Lopez was "one of the main instigators of violence in Sinaloa...

Many people come to the United States for higher wages and better opportunities, but there's also a place in Mexico where there are so many good-paying jobs, people who once immigrated are staying home. The La Vista housing development in Los Cabos, Mexico, is named for its stunning view of the Pacific Coast. The project's developer, Juan Muciño, says the demand for homes in Los Cabos is so high, he's had to bring in workers from other parts of Mexico. But there are not just any jobs. The pay at the La Vista project is triple the rate in the...
