Opinion is divided this morning on Twitter among people who, unlike me, know more than the most basic basics about firearms. It’s not a matter of mere curiosity; as you (should) know, fully automatic weapons have been illegal in the U.S. for decades, which is why even mass shooters hellbent on murder unto death never use them. If Stephen Paddock used a machine gun, how on earth did he get it?

The suspected gunman behind the Las Vegas massacre made several large gambling transactions in recent weeks, according to law enforcement officials. The transactions in Las Vegas by Stephen Paddock were in the tens of thousands, the officials said. It was not immediately clear if those transactions were losses or wins. Paddock's brothers were stunned to learn Monday that their sibling was the suspected perpetrator of the largest mass shooting in modern American history. Law enforcement authorities did release the name and photo of a woman they have located and are questioning as a “person of interest.” Marilou Danley, a 4-foot-11 Asian woman, was believed to have been a “companion” of the shooter — perhaps, even, a roommate. Danley’s Facebook page is filled with photos of her family members and with shots of her many overseas trips. In it, she calls herself a “Proud mom and grandma who lives life to the fullest.”

This morning, the Islamic State’s semi-official news agency, Amaq, took credit for the Las Vegas massacre, which killed 58 and wounded another 515. The likely killer, identified by police as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, was not known to be a supporter of the Islamic State, or indeed a Muslim of any type. Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock had 19 weapons stashed in his hotel room to carry out his massacre — including a collection of rifles and handguns, according to a report. Experts said Paddock’s weapon of choice was likely a fully automatic rifle, given witness accounts of the gunfire, according to New York Magazine. The weapon is especially tough for a civilian to obtain, the mag said.
