President Biden on Wednesday said he would welcome a potential Republican investigation into the federal government’s response to deadly wildfires in Maui after he laid out what his administration has done to help the island recover. Biden, delivering remarks from the White House about the Maui wildfires and Hurricane Idalia, was asked by a reporter about House Republicans’ plans to probe the response to the fires in particular. Biden suggested House Republicans “should go out and talk to every elected official, from the mayors, to the governors, to United States senators” about the situation in Maui. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green...

Democrat megadonor Milton Choy of Hawaii was sentenced to three years in prison for being involved in a multi-million dollar bribery scheme that involved both state and county officials. Honolulu District Court Judge Derrick Watson sentenced Choy, the founder of H2O Process Systems, to a 41-month sentence along with three years of supervised release. Choy was found guilty in September after an investigation revealed he spent “more than $2 million over the course of six years bribing Stewart Stant, the former director of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management, in exchange for more than $19 million in no-bid contracts.” Besides bribing...

We recently reported that the County of Maui sued Hawaiian Electric for allegedly causing the deadly wildfires that swept through West Maui and completely destroyed the town of Lahaina. Now Hawaiian Electric is pointing the finger back at the County of Maui. It asserts it had de-energized powerlines ahead of a second wildfire that broke out on the island in the afternoon. The utility said power lines toppled by high winds likely caused the morning brush fire in Lahaina but electricity had been off for hours when a second fire occurred that afternoon. Hawaiian Electric’s stock soared more than 40%...

I’m talking about the fire that has destroyed the historic town of Lahaina, on the island of Maui, Hawaii. One of the most beautiful places in the world. Lahaina was the capitol of the Kingdom of Hawaii until 1959 when the United States took possession of it. But on August 8, this beautiful little town of 13,000 people was completely destroyed by fire. Approximately 2,000 structures were incinerated; 87% of them, single-family homes.

HONOLULU - Three weeks after a wall of fire claimed at least 115 lives and turned historic Lahaina to ash, Maui County’s highest-ranking official said he didn’t know who was calling the shots at the county’s Emergency Management Center the day the town burned. “I’m not sure who was in charge. (Former Maui Emergency Management Administrator) Herman Andaya was still in charge. He just wasn’t present. He was in contact with his team. I guess by phone. I don’t know exactly how,” Bissen said, during a news conference Tuesday afternoon. When questioned about his whereabouts that day, Bissen said he...

For weeks Hawaii News Now has been asking questions on who was in charge of Maui's Emergency Command Center the night of the deadly fire.

Green Day have sold t-shirts emblazoned with Donald Trump's mug shot to raise relief funds for Maui fire victims. The pop punk veterans recreated their 1997 Nimrod album cover but swapped out the pictures of Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who co-discovered insulin, with the former US president's frowning face covered up with the title in a yellow circle. Referencing their 1997 classic Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), Billie Joe Armstrong and co captioned a picture of the design on Instagram: "Good Riddance. The ultimate Nimrod shirt is available for 72 hours only. Limited edition shirt proceeds will be...

As more evidence emerges from the Maui fire disaster, it is becoming clearer that government officials made a bad situation worse. Not only was the supply of firefighting water delayed by five hours due to bureaucratic dithering and the sound of warning sirens nixed by quibbling over whether it would be appropriate to do so, now it appears that police blockaded cars from driving to safety. Those who obeyed the police officers enforcing the blockade died. Those who disobeyed and drove or walked past the barricades survived. Maui Police Chief John Pelletier defended the blockade, saying "I thought it was...

Miles of fencing and curtains have been put up alongside Front Street, one of Lahaina’s main highways, obstructing the view of ongoing activities.“There seems to be a huge emphasis on ensuring that the media and anyone else can’t see what’s going on,” Cygnus reported in a recent video.“There are miles and miles of this black fence going up that was not here before that is obscuring ground zero and making sure no one can see what’s going on inside of there from the road, no one can get in there, no one can take any pictures.”Moreover, Cygnus said he was...

This is a link to a short video that shows the authorities are putting up miles of black fence so you cannot see beyond it, and they are not allowing anyone to stop or to send a drone into view the burnt areas. Not sure what to make of this, but it seems noteworthy and unusual.

The reason there’s a screen around burned areas in Lahaina? It’s the law. https://health.hawaii.gov/cab/files/2015/09/Hawaii-Fugitive-Dust-Fact-Sheet-Oct-2014-.pdf They are supposed to do as much as they can to prevent drift. A friend just came back from there and said many are restricted from access because of extremely high levels of asbestos. The homes were built during an era when asbestos was a popular element in building materials and is the primary reason there’s so much. He also said, all the work he saw, everyone was wearing full respirators and they were being checked for proper fit. The service dogs that are being used...

It's already being called "The Biden Curtain," as new videos from Lahaina, Maui, reveal miles of black curtains erected to prevent people from seeing what's happening at the origin site of this month's catastrophic wildfires in Hawaii. Geoff Cygnus, a citizen journalist on TikTok, posted the video, with a caption reading: "Miles and miles of black fencing being put up in Lahaina. Ground Zero is now behind the Biden curtain." "There seems to be a huge emphasis on ensuring that the media and anyone else can't see what's going on," Cygnus reported. "There are miles and miles of this black...

The utility said power lines toppled by high winds likely caused the morning brush fire in Lahaina but electricity had been off for hours when a second fire occurred that afternoon. [emphasis added] Hawaiian Electric said power lines appear to have caused the brush fire that started at 6:30 a.m. local time at the intersection of Lahainaluna Road and Hookahua Street in the historic town. The small fire near the downed poles spread into a field near Lahaina Intermediate School. The Maui County Fire Department responded to the morning fire and declared it had been extinguished, according to the company’s...

I am sharing this because I really care about what has happened in Maui. Watch till the end, as Eric closes with prayer. He's a Good Guy. He expresses that, if it can happen on a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, it can happen to anyone. (This is what I've been saying all along. If it can be done to them, it can be done to you.) A Call for Clear Communication and Unity. I know it's You Tube, but this is a tragedy that transcends our opinions of that platform.

Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. (“Hawaiian Electric”), a subsidiary of Hawaiian Electric Industries, Inc., issued an update in response to the lawsuit filed by the County of Maui on Thursday. “Our hearts and hands are with the people of Lahaina and Maui,” said Shelee Kimura, president and CEO of Hawaiian Electric. “Hawaiʻi has thrived on the collective strength and unity of our community, and we need to embrace that spirit now more than ever. There are important lessons to be learned from this tragedy by all of us collectively, and we are resolved to figure out what we need to do...

In the first moments of the Maui fires, when high winds brought down power poles, slapping electrified wires to the dry grass below, there was a reason the flames erupted all at once in long, neat rows — those wires were bare, uninsulated metal that could spark on contact... those wires were among miles of line that Hawaiian Electric Co. left naked to the weather and often-thick foliage, despite a recent push by utilities in other wildfire- and hurricane-prone areas to cover up their lines or bury them. Compounding the problem is that many of the utility’s 60,000, mostly wooden...

Hawaiian officials attributed the cause of catastrophic wildfires to alleged failures from the state's main power utility company and downed power lines this week after Democrats blamed the disaster on global warming. In a lawsuit filed Thursday, the government of Maui County, Hawaii, alleged Hawaiian Electric Company (HECO) and its subsidiaries failed to properly power down live electrical equipment amid a red flag windstorm earlier this month. Due to this failure, downed power lines operated by the utility company sparked a series of deadly fires on the island, the lawsuit claimed. "The lawsuit alleges that the Defendants acted negligently by...

As flames tore through a West Maui neighborhood, car after car of fleeing residents headed for the only paved road out of town in a desperate race for safety. And car after car was turned back toward the rapidly spreading wildfire by a barricade blocking access to Highway 30. One family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their four-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape. One man took a dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames,...
