The current Newsweek has an article by Lisa Miller pretending to take seriously the idea that the Bible looks favorably upon homosexual love and is properly used in support rather than rejection of same-sex marriage.  Here's the final paragraph. My friend the priest James Martin says his favorite Scripture relating to the question of homosexuality is Psalm 139, a song that praises the beauty and imperfection in all of us and that glorifies God’s knowledge of our most secret selves: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” And then he adds that in his heart he believes that...

WaPo: 'Obama Worked to Distance Self From Blagojevich Early On' By Michael M. Bates (Bio | Archive) December 12, 2008 - 10:42 ET Several mainstream media accounts suggest that about the only thing Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich have in common is they both live in Illinois. Today at the Washington Post's Web site, for example, we learn that "Obama Worked to Distance Self From Blagojevich Early On." The article begins by noting that the Illinois governor, unlike other major state Democratic politicians, wasn't allowed to address this year's national convention. There was at least one good reason for that,...

BOSTON (Reuters) - As he seeks to become the first Mormon U.S. president, Republican Mitt Romney faces a dilemma in courting conservative Christians who often dismiss his religion as a cult but now could decide his political fate. ADVERTISEMENT Should he address his religion head-on in a speech, as John F. Kennedy did in 1960 to Texas Baptists while campaigning to become the first Roman Catholic U.S. president? Or should he resist debate over a religion that evangelicals, who are key to winning the Republican primaries, often view with suspicion? "It's a delicate balance, but I don't think the strategy...
  • Newsweek poll: GOP in meltdown

I just read an article from MSNBC that has a new poll out from newsweek stating that the GOP is in meltdown. My confusion is the poll claimed most americans now trusted the democrats on the war on terror and with moral values because of the Foley mess. Is this believable? I fail to see what the war on terror has to do with Foley. I am not sure of the sampling. Does anybody have any info on the polls at this time in 2002? I remember the GOP not polling well in 2004 but not in 2002.

BILL CLINTON responded furiously yesterday to an American television mini-series about the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, which portrays him as so distracted by the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal that he failed to focus on the emerging threat of Osama bin Laden. Senior Clinton Administration officials, including Madeleine Albright, the former Secretary of State, and Sandy Berger, the former National Security Adviser, also demanded yesterday that ABC either substantially edit or cancel its two-part The Path to 9/11, claiming that the drama was defamatory. The programme is also being shown by the BBC. The five-hour drama, which will be shown...

The Cheney presidency By Robert Kuttner | August 26, 2006 GEORGE W. BUSH has been faulted in some quarters for taking an extended vacation while the Middle East festers. It doesn't much matter; the man running the country is Vice President Dick Cheney. Alerts When historians look back on the multiple assaults on our constitutional system of government in this era, Cheney's unprecedented role will come in for overdue notice. Cheney's shotgun mishap, when he accidentally sprayed his host with birdshot, has gotten more media attention than has his ...p>

Fellow TravelersBy David HorowitzFrontPageMagazine.com | July 18, 2006 It is in the nature of Stalinism for its adherents to make a certain kind of lying – and not only to others but first of all to themselves – a fundamental part of their lives. It is always a mistake to assume that Stalinists do not know the truth about the political reality they espouse. If they don’t know the truth (or all of it) one day, they know it the next, and it makes absolutely no difference to them politically. For their loyalty is to something other than the truth....

If Michelle Kosinski's canoe had sprung a leak on NBC's "Today" show Friday, she didn't have much to worry about. In one of television's inadvertently funny moments, the NBC News correspondent was paddling in a canoe during a live report about flooding in Wayne, N.J. While she talked, two men walked between her and the camera _ making it apparent that the water where she was floating was barely ankle-deep. Matt Lauer struggled to keep a straight face, joking about the "holy men" who were walking on water. "Have you run aground yet?" Katie Couric asked. "Why walk when you...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Times dismissed a reporter after an investigation found that his story about the death of a fraternity pledge at a state university "fell far short" of standards, the newspaper said Tuesday. An editor's note in the Times said the March 29 story by Eric Slater had numerous inaccuracies and carried quotations from two named and other unnamed sources that could not be verified. Among the errors, the paper said the story erroneously reported that the victim was alone at the time of his death. "Beyond the specific errors, the newspaper's inquiry found that...

Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission Lee Hamilton blasted the mainstream press yesterday for distorting the Commission's findings on links between Iraq and al Qaida before the Sept. 11 attacks, saying those findings actually support Bush administration contentions. "The sharp differences that the press has drawn [between the White House and the Commission] are not that apparent to me," Hamilton told the Associated Press, a day after insisting that his probe uncovered "all kinds" of connections between Osama bin Laden's terror network and Iraq. Vice Chairman of the 9/11 Commission Lee Hamilton blasted the mainstream press yesterday for distorting the...

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan denied that the White House had a role in keeping a gruesome video of atrocities committed by Saddam Hussein's regime from the media. When asked by Talon News on Thursday to explain the virtual news blackout of the horrific images of Iraqis being beheaded, tongues being cut out, and fingers being chopped off, McClellan said that he'd "leave it to the media to address those issues." McClellan pointed out that Saddam Hussein has a long history of brutal crimes against his own people and his neighbors. "It is important to...

The Network War Against Rush by Sherry and Steven Eros Posted Jan 9, 2004 Rush Limbaugh's dependence on painkillers, his recent drug treatment, and related legal problems have headlined the three major network news broadcasts repeatedly over a period of many weeks now. The reports are consistently cast in the most lurid, exaggerated, inflammatory and prejudicial terms. The persistent drumbeat began with Limbaugh's ESPN comments alleging media favoritism toward black quarterback Donovan McNabb and exploded in the days following the National Enquirer's disclosure of Limbaugh's addiction to painkillers. Network anchors Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings all slyly insinuated...

ROBERT HILLMAN / The Dallas Morning News WASHINGTON – Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, exposing the simmering partisan tensions around the debate over a war with Iraq, accused President Bush on Wednesday of playing politics with the issue and demanded an apology. "This has got to end," the South Dakota Democrat thundered on the Senate floor, calling the president "wrong." His voice cracking with anger, Mr. Daschle said it was "outrageous" that the president had asserted Monday in New Jersey that the Senate, controlled...
