Back in 2004, Jim Gilchrist, a retired Marine and the founder of the California Minutemen Project, emailed a few dozen friends and family suggesting that concerned civilians personally combat illegal immigration by traveling to the Arizona border with him. Gilchrist lives in Orange County, Calif., but the Arizona border was the most heavily trafficked and sparsely patrolled. That email reached thousands of people and touched a nerve.

An Arizona jury has sentenced a border activist to death in the 2009 murder of a young girl and her father. The Pima County Attorney's Office said Tuesday the Tucson jury returned the death penalty verdict against 43-year-old Shawna Forde. She now becomes the third woman on Arizona's death row.

A Mexican teenager who pleaded guilty to killing Border Patrol Agent Robert Rosas last year was sentenced Thursday to 40 years in prison. Christian Daniel Castro Alvarez, 17, was sentenced in federal court in downtown San Diego.
