George Norcross III, the South Jersey Democratic power broker long at odds with the governor, has declared all-out war on Phil Murphy, calling him a “liar” and “politically incompetent.” After enduring a steady drumbeat of criticism over how his company and other entities tied to him allegedly benefitted from lucrative tax incentives meant to help revive the city of Camden, Norcross went on the attack. He lambasted a special governor’s task force deployed to investigate the New Jersey Economic Development Authority in connection with those tax incentives, as well as the governor.

The developing Menendez trial stunned wounded Hudson guys who for years stared in awe at the artful internationalism of their godfather, the kid from Union City who grew up with many of them – and then kept growing, into one of the wonders of the Hudson world and – improbably given his humble background – chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and a probable future Secretary of State. Now he’s in trouble, the senior senator from New Jersey, up on federal corruption charges; and conversations about that seat he occupies play out as part of that political juggling act...

Donald Trump met Saturday with Herman Cain -- whom the real estate mogul called "Mr. 9-9-9" -- and a group of African-American pastors on how to better engage African-American voters. After Cain addressed the crowd in Norcross, Georgia, Trump praised the former presidential candidate's "9-9-9" tax proposal from the 2012 campaign. "When he said 9-9-9, I said, 'What the hell is that?' But he had a good thing," Trump told those in attendance, referring to Cain as "Mr. 9-9-9." The 9-9-9 plan would have replaced almost all current taxes and with a 9% income tax, a 9% corporate tax and...

European, Asian and Canadian companies are taking advantage of the weaker dollar to buy their U.S. counterparts at a record pace, increasing investment in the United States but also raising fears about a potential loss of jobs and autonomy. "We could be looking at the world's largest tag sale if we continue to see declines in the dollar," said Donald Klepper-Smith, chief economist at DataCore Partners. In the latest large deal aided by a weak dollar, Commerce Bancorp, which is based in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, agreed Tuesday to be acquired by Toronto-Dominion Bank of Canada in a cash-and-shares deal...

For the first time since Jon Corzine — bored with Washington after just four years in the U.S. Senate — tossed his prodigious bankbook into the race, Republicans are starting to believe that they have a real shot in November's New Jersey gubernatorial election. That's because of the explosive tape recordings that have rocked New Jersey after being released just days ago over the opposition of Democratic state Attorney General Peter Harvey, who sat on them for more than two years and spent several weeks fighting their release. In the end, 75 minutes' worth were made public. Harvey still has...

TRENTON, March 31 - In a series of secretly recorded conversations, the Democratic power broker George E. Norcross III made threats, discussed patronage jobs and offered vaguely worded inducements to persuade a small-town councilman to fire a defiant municipal employee. The conversations were on audio tapes released on Thursday by the New Jersey attorney general's office. The tapes, which were recorded in early 2001 by a Palmyra councilman, John Gural, offer a rare glimpse of the volatile but media-shy Mr. Norcross flexing his political muscle: bragging about his access to powerful elected officials like United States Senator Jon S. Corzine...
