Memo to Charlie Rangel: You’re in some pretty uncharted waters if former Gov. David Paterson — son of one of your closest friends and allies — is publicly taking you to task for your racially charged remarks. The hoopla began with a Rangel slam against the Tea Party: “It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police,” the Harlem congressman told Politico. “They didn’t care about how they looked.” In other words, the Tea Partiers are the heirs of Bull Connor and the segregationists.

Mustafa Bakari, an Egyptian politician, issued a brutal assessment of U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, Anne Patterson. From the way Charlie Rangel celebrated his 80th birthday bash, you would never know he’s a man caught up in 13 chargers of ethics violations and about to go on trial just before the November elections. Rangel celebrated in high fashion at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan alongside Sen. Chuck Schumer, Gov. Patterson, and NY State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo who spent much their speeches defending the corrupt politician. The event was also a fundraiser for Rangel. Think the metal detectors and other ramped-up security plans for the Texas Capitol will keep out unlicensed guns? Think again, officials said Wednesday. Under current state law, so-called "long guns" — rifles, shotguns and the like — will remain legal in the domed landmark if they are carried openly, in a non-threatening way. And, under an exemption approved Tuesday as a part of a new security plan, Texans with a concealed-handgun license will be able to take their pistols into the statehouse as well.

Albany's dysfunction will keep Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's campaign for governor on ice for the foreseeable future. A source close to Cuomo confirmed the AG will not announce his candidacy as long as his investigations into both Gov. Paterson and Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. (D-Bronx) are open. It could take more than a month for the two cases to be resolved. The desire to wrap up his probes into fellow elected officials before jumping into the race gives Cuomo a rationale for continuing to avoid weighing in on contentious issues like the budget and ethics reform.

A Dutchess County woman took a daily $300 taxi ride to visit her son in Albany for three years -- and taxpayers picked up the tab. The $196,000 cab bill was just one example of $169 million misspent by Medicaid, according to state Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, who released three audits Tuesday on the public system that pays for the health care for the state's poor and disabled. Medicaid, which is funded federal, state and county money, spends $45 billion a year. DiNapoli's auditors identified overpayments, billing errors, administrative mistakes and abuse.
