PHOENIX - Arizona's highest court will hear arguments from a custom stationery business that believes a Phoenix anti-discrimination law violates their religious freedom. The Arizona Supreme Court said Tuesday it will take the case between Brush & Nib Studio and the city. Brush & Nib's Christian owners said in a 2016 lawsuit that the ordinance forces them to make invitations and other stationery for same-sex weddings under threats of fines and jail time.

ICE told Arizona Sheriffs it has run out of detention space to handle the number of migrants illegally crossing the border and presenting themselves at ports of entry. This lack of housing and the Flores Settlement’s 20-day release requirement forced ICE to release a large number of “family units" in Arizona all at once. Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot told Fox News, “ICE hasn’t been able to keep up with individuals coming up the border from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, because they’re overwhelmed. They’re releasing them out of the front door of their facilities…Each of our communities are going...

Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery's office has gone on the defensive, doubling down on the decision to reduce the charges against Holly Davis, who shot and killed a Chinese exchange student in January 2016. As Phoenix New Times reported back in April, prosecutors had initially attempted to charge Davis on 14 criminal counts, including first-degree murder, endangerment, and aggravated assault, after she rear-ended 19-year-old Yue Jiang's Mercedes and then fired into one of the vehicle's windows. In late February of this year, Davis pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, and the other charges were dropped. The plea deal came with a...

The city of Phoenix is fighting back against a bid by a Christian law firm to get the state’s high court to conclude that businesses have a right to refuse to provide certain services to gays. In new legal filings Friday, attorney Eric Fraser said there is no dispute about the heart of the case. “If a same-sex couple asks Brush & Nib (Studio) for custom wedding products, Brush & Nib will refuse service, regardless of the wording or design the couple wants,’’ he told the Arizona Supreme Court. And the owners of the firm would make a plain-vanilla wedding...

Media is being vague about how many actually showed up to view McCain's coffin at the AZ State Capitol. I can only find "more than 1500" or "thousands." I am curious--why: McCain's very last campaign rally in 2016 drew less than 150--even with free dinner and drinks being offered. And..... President Trump's rally in August 2017 drew nearly 20,000. The fake news media didn't want to talk about those big numbers.

An investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in 2002 revealed O’Brien had protected suspected pedophile priests.

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. (AP) -- It was five days before ballots will be counted in his bid for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, and former Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio had no idea what he was doing. The final days of a campaign are usually frantic, with candidates' every moment scheduled to ensure they meet as many voters as possible. But Arpaio had nothing planned Thursday until a 4:30 p.m. meeting. "I ought to go to a Mexican restaurant and see how they treat me," Arpaio, 86, said as he sat in his strip mall office. So he and his...

Mayoral candidate Daniel Valenzuela had his salary garnished last year while a member of the Phoenix City Council because of thousands of dollars in unpaid debt, Phoenix New Times has learned. Valenzuela owed $12,208 in debt and interest to the Arizona Federal Credit Union as recently as last year, court documents show. Until April, Valenzuela’s city salary was being garnished to pay back the money owed after the creditor secured a judgment against Valenzuela in Agua Fria Justice Court.

Pastoral Letter from Bishop Olmsted and Bishop Nevares Regarding Recent Abuse Scandals August 17, 2018 Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, We write you this day to express our own deep level of sadness and anger about the recent revelations surrounding Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and the newly released Pennsylvania Grand Jury report. These shameful and evil actions have harmed many innocent people, especially the young; and they are utterly inexcusable. This has also caused great pain, confusion and dismay among us all — laity, religious and clergy — who remain committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are sorry...

At 1:37 p.m. on May 30, Cassidy, a law student at Arizona State University, began tweeting about her experience at an airport gate en route to Phoenix from a European trip. She was about to board an American Airlines flight when the gate agent told her she needed to pay $50 to bring her carry-on with her. If she didn't want to pay, the agent said,...

PHOENIX (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department says an appeals court overstepped its bounds when it ordered the appointment of a special prosecutor to pursue an appeal involving a pardon of retired Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The appointment was previously ordered by a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.{snip} The Justice Department said in its appellate brief that “the government does not abdicate the prosecutorial function when it agrees with a defendant on a legal question.” Arpaio’s attorneys argued that appointing a special prosecutor “raises serious questions about whether the court is actively participating in the prosecution...."

Hillary Clinton herself was not worried about even the appearance of scandal caused by transmitting classified documents over a private home-brewed server, or enabling her husband to shake down foreign donations to their shared foundation, or destroying some 30,000 emails. Evidently, she instead reasoned that she was within months of becoming President Hillary Clinton and therefore, in her Clintonesque view of the presidency, exempt from all further criminal exposure. Would a President Clinton have allowed the FBI to reopen their strangely aborted Uranium One investigation; would the FBI have asked her whether she communicated over an unsecure server with the...

After news broke about an airport meeting between former Attorney General Loretta Lynch and former President Bill Clinton in the midst of last year’s presidential campaign, the FBI scrambled to identify the source who leaked details about the encounter and discipline him or her, according to emails released on the FBI website on Friday. The internal emails show that on June 29, 2016, a senior spokeswoman for the Justice Department emailed her counterparts at the FBI to flag articles that were starting to appear about the meeting. In the email, the spokeswoman, Melanie Newman, described the encounter as “a casual,...
