Shiva me timbers! A pirate radio station offering Talmudic wisdom and spouting Jewish fables has for weeks been interfering with 105.9 WQXR’s public broadcast in Kensington, Windsor Terrace, and parts of Park Slope, and local fans of New York’s only classical radio station say they’re fed up. “It’s public radio, I contribute to it, and I can’t listen to it because this guy’s there,” said Courtelyou Road resident Patrick Russell. “It’s the only classical station in the city, and it’s a crime!”

Bay State politicians are defending an unlicensed radio station that was shut down this week by the Federal Communications Commission, but prosecutors say the crackdown was necessary to prevent a “public safety hazard.” U.S. Marshals and the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau shut down Touch 106.1 FM, an unlicensed Dorchester station, Thursday and seized radio equipment, according to U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz. Gov. Deval Patrick yesterday said he was “incredibly disappointed” by the raid and plans to ask the U.S. Attorney’s office to back down. “You’d like to think of them bringing more of a problem-solving approach,” he said. “Touch is a...

Governor Deval Patrick (D-MA) today sharply criticized federal agents for shutting down an unlicensed radio station in Grove Hall and said he tried to dissuade them from raiding the station that bills itself as the fabric of the black community. Patrick, the state’s first African-American governor, said he had received advanced warning from the US attorney’s office that TOUCH 106.1 FM was going to be raided and urged the office not to proceed. But federal agents disregarded him. They swept into the station Thursday and seized transmission equipment in what they called a strike against illegally operating radio stations.

BROCKTON — Firefighters driving to work at the Pleasant Street station on the edge of downtown started reporting interference on their car radios this week. Then on Wednesday, music started playing over the speakers in the station used for dispatching fire engines and garbling emergency communications. “In the station, those speakers are used to alert firefighters to an incident, and that’s how we get the type of call and location,” said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Galligan. “Any interference is a serious issue.” Galligan called officer Scott Uhlman, the Brockton Police Department’s radio guru, and City Councilor Dennis DeNapoli to help...

The Educational Media Foundation tells the FCC “this pirate station is having a significant impact on the reception [of what is now WKLV] in portions of its service area.” It has a very good idea where the pirate’s hiding out: “in East Orange, New Jersey, specifically near South Maple Avenue and Sussex Avenue, west of the Garden State Parkway.” “Jamminz” isn’t exactly hiding, however. EMF claims that “Jamminz Radio’s programming is…open and notorious.” The K-Love folks paid Cox $15.5 million and put their contemporary Christian network “K-Love” format on the former WCTZ, Port Chester NY at 96.7. That was going...

The FCC alleges that Lloyd Morris and Robert Brown were engaged in the operation of an unlicensed FM station at 99.7 in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. Over six months ago (October 1, 2010), the Commission issued a $15,000 Notice of Apparent Liability against both men, and neither has filed a response. The next step for the FCC is to "affirm the forfeiture" with forfeiture orders.

Embattled City Councilor Chuck Turner gave his first lengthy media interview to an unlicensed Grove Hall radio station that owes the federal government $17,000. Turner spent over an hour yesterday morning chatting it up with the “Wake Up Live Morning Crew” on TOUCH 106.1-FM. Turner was in the studio and took calls from listeners. Charles Clemons, who founded the 100-watt music station, said he asked Turner about the charges. “He said he is innocent,” said Clemons, who supports Turner. Turner usually goes on the show every other Monday, but asked to appear yesterday in the wake of the FBI charges....

AUGUSTA, Ga -- It's a new radio station that's doing a lot of explicit talking, illegally. Now the community is talking about 99.9 FM. For the second day in a row, 99.9's owner said he would meet with News 12 to explain himself and for the second day in a row he backed out, and that has some in the community are crying foul. It's renegade radio right in the middle of your FM dial, and on 99.9 is where you will find DJ Shortdog, "Yeah it's official, we're underground. We don't have a license. Slap me on the wrist."...

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After warnings, inspections and finally a raid, 90.9 FM is silent. Knoxville First Amendment Radio, or KFAR (pronounced "kay-far"), was an unapologetic voice of unlicensed "pirate radio" activism, freewheeling conversation, alternative news like "Democracy Now!" and "Free Speech Radio News" and music since 2001. But Federal Communications Commission agents and U.S. marshals emptied the station's graffiti-decorated trailer - a former crack house on a hilltop near the University of Tennessee - of radio gear Sept. 14. A poster of Che Guevara, the Cuban revolutionary, remains on a control...
