POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- Tuesday marks the 48th anniversary of the Silver Bridge collapse that killed 46 people and changed a small West Virginia town forever. It happened Dec., 15, 1967, during rush hour traffic in Point Pleasant. The investigation of the collapse pointed to a single eyebar in a suspension chain due to a defect. All but two victims were found in the debris. The bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge two years later in 1969. *Photo from WV Archives at the Culture Center VIDEO ON LINK

PARKERSBURG - A Meigs County native has written a book about the Battle of Point Pleasant and whether it was the first fought in the Revolutionary War. Charles S. Badgley of the Badgley Publishing Co., Canal Winchester, Ohio, says he often heard while growing up along the river in Meigs County that the battle was the first in the war, the basis of his most recent novel, "A Point of Controversy." Conventional wisdom was the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775 were the first in the war of independence. "The controversy has been around a long time, it actually...

POINT PLEASANT, N.J. -- The streets are tree-lined, and mostly quiet. The breezes that blow in off the Atlantic Ocean? Heavenly. Even the teenagers are nice, says Eric Hansch, who sees more than his share of them in his Atomic CDs record store when school lets out. "They're the politest kids you'll ever meet," he said. Point Pleasant, indeed. The question around here these days: What the devil was FOX thinking, bringing Satan's offspring ashore in such an idyllic place? Sure, the network's new series "Point Pleasant" is just fiction. But still. "It's evil," said Barbara Stancel, 60, a lifelong...

My team of two arrived at the Mason Co. courthouse at 12:30 Saturday to set up our sound and hang our flags. We accepted posters from the school children and taped them to the doors to be judged. The ceremony began at 1:00 p.m. with prayer led by self. Then a young lady who is competing in the Miss West Va. beauty pageant sang the National Anthem. Then the children led the crowd of 50-60 people in the Pledge of Allegiance. We brought forward all the veterans to be honored and thanked. We also thanked the first responders in our community.Our...

Eastern European wave filling Shore jobs Published in the Home News Tribune 7/07/02 By JOHN LOFTUS STAFF WRITER [Ocean City, N.J. --]  There are plenty of jobs in Bulgaria. But Ana Ivanova says the money isn't good. So for the second summer in a row, she has come to Ocean City, N.J., to work for the kind of pay college kids earn in an American resort town. That would be about four times, maybe more, she said, than she could get back in her hometown, Sofia, the Bulgarian capital. Trouble is, as of late June, she had not found a...
