Harvard Lays an Egg The triumph of the diversity faction and the fall of Larry Summers by James Piereson 03/06/2006, Volume 011, Issue 24 When the late Allan Bloom visited the Harvard campus some years ago to deliver a speech on his bestselling book The Closing of the American Mind, he began his remarks with the salutation, "Fellow Elitists," a takeoff on Franklin Roosevelt's address years earlier to the nativist Daughters of the American Revolution which he introduced with the words, "Fellow Immigrants." Bloom was having some fun at the expense of Harvard's students and faculty, all of whom had...

PC Annapolis Lt. Bryan Black, the Naval Academy instructor who faces a court-martial for using salty language in the presence of a female midshipman, faces a politically correct atmosphere at the Annapolis campus that jeopardizes his right to fair adjudication. That assessment does not come from his friends or attorney, but from the Marine Corps officer who investigated him and testified at a pretrial hearing.

Something's been gnawing at me for a long time. I can't even begin to put my finger on when it all began, but I suspect it was sometime during the Clinton Presidency. But don't let me get side-tracked on that mess, when this real problem is ongoing to this day and getting worse. After the cold war ended, the Soviet enemy disappeared and there was no one left in the world to hate, except for America. It started out slowly, but we began to see misuse of armed forces by Clinton with obvious lies that they would be short excursions...

Green now will be worn for notifying relatives of the dead. Some say the move is disrespectful. With the toll of Marines killed in Iraq mounting, the Marine Corps is no longer requiring the Marines notifying families of such deaths to wear the Corps' distinctive dress blue uniform.

On Saturday we traveled from our home in Lakewood to Simi Valley to visit friends and accompany them to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. They have struck up a friendship with an extraordinary person who is a docent at the Library and we couldn’t resist the promise of a private tour. The tour was wonderful. The grounds magnificent, the exhibits awe inspiring including the replica of the Oval Office. Then we got to the Lewis and Clark exhibition. There were canoes and a authentic reproduction of one of their Keel Boats, an Indian village, the supplies and trinkets they carried...

PIN A MEDAL ON ‘EM “In San Diego, a couple of teachers have been suspended for showing the pictures of American Nick Berg being killed by his Muslim captors in Iraq. Oh, the outrage that our delicate high schoolers would be subjected to reality. Far from suspending these teachers, we should give them medals (maybe the ones John Kerry threw away). They have done their students a big favor. They have introduced these soon-to-be-adults to the notion that it is a dangerous world out there. “...It is a mean, nasty, dreadful world out there, but one which we have managed...

For a sport with roots steeped in the South, it appears NASCAR could find itself again heading southward in a quest for new fans and new horizons. South of the border, that is. With last month's announcement that Brazilian open-wheel driver Christian Fittipaldi will leave CART and become a full-time driver on the Busch circuit in 2003, it's likely more Latinos will soon follow Fittipaldi, either as fans or as drivers, team members or team owners. And it's that same community -- with its sheer numbers, markets and rabid fan base -- that NASCAR covets so highly. It's no wonder...

In Washington, it’s everywhere, like God and mendacity: The DC Bob. As people talk, in fern bars, in eateries, on the sidewalk, an incorrect thought occurs – something that might upset Them. You know who They are: The racial, sexual, religious, and political groups that One Doesn’t Offend, the ideas and policies one mustn’t mention, the simple observations of fact that one may not make. We all know where trouble lies. And we are careful. The incipient malefactor leans forward. He’s getting closer to his hearers to avoid eavesdroppers. Next he drops his chin and looks furtively over each shoulder...

April 12, 2002 White male's dilemma: What can I do if everyone hates me? Rob Daumeyer Like a Frito in a fraternity house, it's tough to be me. And here's the scary thing: Until recently, I didn't even know it. For 37-odd years, I've been blissfully unaware of how reviled I was. See, I'm a white, Roman-Catholic American. And you thought you had problems. As a white person, I'm apparently privileged. At least that's what I read in the newspapers and see on television. I have special advantages, immunities, permissions, rights and benefits because of my skin color. It's hard...
