Pop-Up Videos Hit Instant Messengers Sat Oct 30, 2004 By Leslie Walker It has come to this: Pop-up video attack ads on instant messaging software. The ads are part of a noticeable ramp-up in Internet political advertising that some Web sites report in the last days before Tuesday's election. Arlington resident Chris Stammer discovered the latest flavor of electronic attack ads when he signed onto his AOL Instant Messenger program last week and saw an image of Sen. John Edwards (news - web sites) above his list of messaging "buddies." A video started in a pop-up window, showing the Democratic...

I am having a problem with my computer at work. While connected to the internet, with MSN as the main page, I am now receiving lots of popup ads which I never had before. When I am on FR, whichever thread I am monitoring, there are lots of keywords which are highlighted such as "sex", "love" and others. Highlighted in the sense that they appear to be hyperlinks. When I right click on any one of them and click Properties, the box thing shows a URL of ...Adinstall or something to that effect. I have also had, right out of...

DUBLIN, Ireland - Ireland has become the first country on earth to cut off direct-dialed calls to entire nations in a bid to crack down on Internet-based fraud. The crackdown, announced this week and due to come into force Oct. 4, will block calls to 13 locations — all but one of them far-flung islands — to deter fraudsters from breaking into people's computers and hijacking their modems for profit. The government-appointed Commission for Communications Regulation said it was obliged to act after receiving more than 300 complaints this year from Internet users who discovered that their connections had been...

It ain't the Spainish......I watch the wussies of the world crumble unnder hostage takings and clearly see the intelligence and bravery of America and Briton......The intelligence is already being proved as more and more spinless nations run from the hostages and cave in failing to see what America and the British already knew:Give in and "They'll be back..."The bravery of a people who hate violence and abuse, but refuse to cave into it becasue they know it only breeds more of both......America and Briton are Courageous in their standing firm, and those who are murdered by these cowards who hide...
• Pop-up program reads keystrokes, steals passwords

06/30/2004 5:37:14 AM PDT · by Happy2BMe · 56 replies · 2,673+ views
A malicious program that installs itself through a pop-up can read keystrokes and steal passwords when victims visit any of nearly 50 targeted banking sites, security researchers warned on Tuesday. The targeted sites include major financial institutions, such as Citibank, Barclays Bank and Deutsche Bank, researcher Marcus Sachs said Tuesday. "If (the program) recognizes that you are on one of those sites, it does keystroke logging," said Sachs, director of the Internet Storm Center, a site that monitors network threats. Even though all financial sites use encryption built into the browser to protect log-in data, the Trojan horse program can...
• Defeating the new annoying Drudgereport.com popbehind ads which thwart antipopup software

I am a frequent Drudgereport.com visitor - in fact, it's my homepage. Unfortunately, Matt Drudge is using a new type of popup ad which will open the window even if you use anti-popup software. I am also an afficianado, as I'm sure many other FReepers are, of anti-popup software. I don't mind seeing ads when I browse, but popups are very intrusive and often end up crashing my web browser, or hanging it for a minute or three at a time. BTW, the anti-popup software I use is built into the free & excellent Google Toolbar, available from http://toolbar.google.com/ I...
• Pop-up ads for Bauer give L.L. Bean fits

L.L. Bean officials can sympathize with people who are annoyed by pop-up ads on the Internet. For Bean, however, the ads create more than an annoyance: They are costing the Freeport retailer business and have led to an expensive cross-country legal battle.Bean is involved in a lawsuit with Gator.com Corp., a California company that manufacturers adware - programs that are designed to provide Internet users with pop-up advertising about products and services that might interest them, based on the Web sites they visit. In Bean's case, Gator.com's adware caused some customers who called up llbean.com to be greeted by a...

Jeff Reikowski is dreading the arrival of his March phone bill. Over the past two months, he has been charged for more than $1,000 in international calls he didn't make, to a place he'd never heard of — Sao Tome. He called the phone company to dispute the January bill. Several conversations later, about $800 in disputed charges for that month were dropped. But he's still on the hook for more than $300, including taxes, for February calls to the same number in Sao Tome, which is the capital city of the Republic of Sao Tome and Principe, islands in...

I sat dont at my station over an hour ago and responded to an Explorer upgrade option without thinking. This ISN'T a normal option, it was simply a pop-up. Without thinking I responded to upgrade and downloaded a nightmare. I have yet to break this. It consists of an additional bar which creates a new home page, http://find.intelius.com with files I've deleted in addition to wwd.ieplugin[1] - and proceeds to iniate infinite pop-ups of EVERY type out of http://www.n-case.com. ANYTHING internet related will be tattooed with the new bar. View - Toolbars - Intelligent Explorer" will eliminate the bar from...

Microsoft confirmed it intends to add pop-up blocking to Internet Explorer as part of its Service Pack 2 release, due the first half of 2004. Meanwhile, agencies, advertisers and publishers suggest they'll be ready to kiss the ad units goodbye -- when the time comes. An important question that remains unanswered is whether IE pop-up blocking will be turned on by default. Microsoft said only that it plans to include the feature, and will gather user feedback before announcing further details. "If they turn it on by default, that would effectively kill pop-up advertising on the Web," said Nate Elliott,...

One of the most annoying forms of advertising on the Internet — pop-up ads — could be toast, pending Microsoft's (MSFT) recent decision to test pop-up-blocking tools for future versions of Internet Explorer. "This will save online marketers from themselves," says Jim Nail of Forrester Research.

• AOL Quietly Combats Pop-Up Spam Messages

Even more annoying than junk e-mail are all the spam messages that "pop up" through a little-used feature in Windows. As part of its spam-fighting efforts, America Online has been turning off that feature for its customers without telling them. AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein said the feedback has been all positive, and he knows of no complaints to AOL call centers about side effects on other applications that may need that feature. Nonetheless, AOL's action worries some security experts who were told about it by The Associated Press. "They are trying to do the right thing ... but you sort...

Since yesterday I am being invaded by a "popup" that I've never seen before. It comes every few minutes, and each time is selling a different "product." Every one has the heading of "Apropos Media." The ones I remember are "memory metering," "weather bug," "task bar update." I think there are a couple more. I have the new earthlink popup blocker which works great, but this isn't blocked for some reason. Ah, another one just came up: "browser/cleaner." Manufactured by Microsoft. Is this coming from MS??? How do I get rid of it?

It sounds innocent enough, even patriotic. "Show your support for our troops by downloading our free cursors!" says MyFreeCursors.com. One click, and your mouse pointer is an American flag. But that click will cost you. It gives the company behind the Web site, publicly traded eUniverse Inc., the right to watch your every move on the Internet. "IT'S DIABOLICAL, and you can quote me on that," said Beth Givens, director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. A Web user complained to Givens after her child was almost tricked into downloading software from MyFreeCursors.com, software Givens called spyware. "They are using patriotism...
• Why am I getting pop-ups

FR (Latest Posts) is my home page, and I open 2 browsers whenever I start my day or whenever I shut down and start up again. I have Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper Companion on my computer, but I have to turn it off to get the 2nd browser to launch. After I've launched both browsers and before I can turn Panicware back on, I GET A STINKING POP-UP AD! I know FR doesn't do advertising, so where in the world are these ads coming from? Any ideas? Anyone else having this problem? HELP!

Everybody hates pop-ups -- you know, those extra ads that unexpectedly appear in new windows on top of or behind the window where you are surfing on almost every site except for PBS. Well maybe not EVERYBODY hates them. In a Jupiter-MediaMetrix survey last year, only 41 percent of respondents were against pop-ups, though if they had flipped the survey around and asked how many respondents LIKED pop-ups, my guess is the number would have been near zero. And even 41 percent is too many consumers to annoy at one sitting. So pop-ups are bad, which means that getting rid...

On any regular day I will go to Drudge then come to FreeRepublic, I've been doing this for years now. Lately, when I move from one to the other I get a full screen pop-up taking me to a site called WWW.SpyOnYou.com. It always seems to occur after I click on my link to FR while on Drudge or vice versa. I've searched for cookies and sure enough I find one - then I delete it - then later the popup occurs again - and the cookie is back. Any ideas on how to skip this part of my internet...

Every time I come here, I get these little pop-ups with bikini clad models offering "chat" and "real 10s, click here to play." It only started recently.I realize that FR needs and has a right to ad revenue and I'm no prude but I really don't need my wife or employer (both of whom tolerate a certain amount of--and this is key--NON-PORN surfing) seeing one of these pop ups and thinking I'm going to porn sites.
