Authorities believe they may have found the remains of two Independence children missing since June 2004, the mother of Sam and Lindsey Porter said Sunday. Tina Porter told The Kansas City Star that Independence police officers told her that they found human remains in the woods along Cement City Road in Sugar Creek. “I saw the police cars drive up, and my first thought was that they were coming to tell me they’d found Sam and Lindsey alive,” she said. “I feel so sick. It just doesn’t seem real.” Independence police spokesman Tom Gentry said Sunday night that authorities had...

Excerpt - NEW YORK - Porter Wagoner looks right at home in the marble lobby of Manhattan's Roosevelt Hotel. He wears a dark Western suit and tie and holds a shiny black cane. The glare from the crystal chandelier reflects off his eyeglasses as he tilts his head back, trying to remember the last time he played Madison Square Garden. Sometime in the '70s ... one of those package tours ... Little Jimmie Dickens and Faron Young were there ... some others he can't recall ... Back then, "The Thin Man from West Plains" was still the grand showman of...

Michael Hayden settles in as director of the Central Intelligence Agency, Congress needs to ask hard questions of the man he has said he wants to appoint as deputy director of the CIA: former operations chief Stephen R. Kappes. Kappes is a former Marine who elicits strong praise from former operations officers such as Gary Berntsen, who worked under him for two years. Hayden also heaped praise on Kappes. "When I did the Rolodex check around the community about Steve … they’re almost universally positive,"...

Grant now planned to move his army down the opposite bank of the river, cross back to Mississippi, and approach the city from the east. The...

At first, Joey Porter pledged not to speak with reporters after Super Bowl XL Media Day. Then, he softened his stance and promised to keep his outspoken mouth in check. Wednesday, he took that plan and threw it to the ground like a defenseless quarterback. The Steelers' loquacious linebacker couldn't contain himself yesterday when he learned Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens predicted Jerome Bettis' return to Detroit would culminate with a Super Bowl loss. "I've been asleep all week, but now, I got woke up," Porter said yesterday. "I've got my first taste of blood, and now I'm thirsty...

Traitors of Record: The Record of the New York TimesBy Fedora “. . .the most untrustworthy paper in the United States. . .” --President Dwight Eisenhower, referring to the New York TimesIntroductionLast week Senator John Cornyn criticized the New York Times for endangering national security with a James Risen story on NSA surveillance timed to coincide with a vote on the Patriot Act and, incidentally, with the release of a book by Risen. A review of the record illustrates that endangering national security through irresponsible leaks is nothing new for the New York Times. Some particularly outrageous examples are worth...

Fugitive murderer returns to Mass. after 20 years on the lam By DENISE LAVOIE AP Legal Affairs Writer March 24, 2005 Dottie Johnson lobbied for years to keep the man convicted of killing her 21-year-old cousin from gaining his freedom. Now, two decades after he escaped from a Massachusetts prison and disappeared, Norman A. Porter Jr. is back in custody. "It's been a very emotional thing," she said, recalling the almost 45 years since her cousin, John "Jackie" Pigott, was shot to death in a robbery at the Saugus retail store where he worked. October 31, 2004, 12:42 p.m. John Kerry's Other Vietnam WarWhy would we trust this man to be our president? By Stephen Morris John Kerry has fought this election campaign as a political moderate. Certainly his main foreign-policy advisers are moderate Democrats. But that campaign posture disguises his 34-year record in public life — which produced no legislative achievement, but featured a well-documented obsession with Vietnam and Cambodia that continues to the present day. Kerry made his four and a half months of service in Vietnam an electoral issue, but it's his 34 years of political activism on Vietnam and...

Porter Goss as CIA director, saying that would be picking the wrong fight in this election year. Democrats should ask tough questions of Goss, R-Fla., at Senate confirmation hearings next month, but "my view is this is the wrong fight," Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "To get stuck in a fight about Porter Goss...
