An article on the front page of today's Boston Globe mentions Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and the town hall meetings as contributing to "tension," a degree of heat in political discourse," "a potential for physical danger in their anger," etc. I was wondering when someone would accuse talk radio -- the strategy used by President Clinton after the Oklahoma City bombing -- and I wasn't disappointed: Former secretary of defense William S. Cohen, who represented Maine for three terms in the House and three terms in the Senate between 1973 and 1997, said the more partisan tenor of political...

LONDON — Spewing oil and alienating Americans with its chief executive’s impolitic remarks, BP may be Public Enemy No. 1 in the United States. But in Britain, where the company is a mainstay of the stock market and a favorite of pension funds, investors and politicians are becoming increasingly angry at the blistering attacks from across the Atlantic. BP’s share price, even after recovering some ground in New York trading on Thursday, has fallen more than 40 percent since the environmental catastrophe in April, and some analysts say the crisis could lead to the takeover or even the bankruptcy of...

Sunday could be a bittersweet first Mother's Day for Casey Greenfield. Greenfield is a pretty, ginger-haired, Yale-educated lawyer and writer who last March gave birth to a love child. The baby's father is married CNN star and best-selling New Yorker writer Jeffrey Toobin. (Casey's father is esteemed political pundit Jeff Greenfield.) Ever since we broke the news of her pregnancy, Casey has remained silent about the baby drama. But now some of her friends are fed up with what they claim is less-than-gallant behavior on Toobin's part. Greenfield, now 36, was in her 20s when she fell for Toobin, now...

When Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind) announced his retirement, the media revived their drumbeat that our government is broken. As the indispensable Brent Bozell pointed out last week, Democrats and the media only complain of broken government when the liberals can’t get their agenda enacted. The problem isn’t that our government isn’t working: it’s that President Obama’s agenda is entirely perverse. It reverses the essential order of priorities, devoting the energy of government exclusively to his plans to revolutionize our country. Since last June, congress and the White House have been consumed by President Obama’s plan to impose government control on...

Berlin. Germany's labor minister resigned Friday after conceding that a military report on a deadly September airstrike in northern Afghanistan failed to reach him while he held the government's defense portfolio. Labor Minister Franz Josef Jung made the announcement a day after the head of Germany's armed forces, Gen. Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and deputy Defense Minister Peter Wichert also stepped down. Jung said he was taking responsibility for the fact that the German military report on the Sept. 4 airstrike didn't reach him, despite his being defense minister at the time. "I am taking responsibility for the Defense Ministry's internal information...

Seeing as they each impact key pillars of what today passes for liberalism, there seems to be more than a few connections between the recent ACORN stings by Giles, O’Keefe and Breitbart, and the recent hacking of the emails of the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit, or “Global WarmingGate”, as Charlie Martin dubs it elsewhere at Pajamas. Not the least is that they each sent the legacy media into full gatekeeper mode, hoping to prevent exciting, important news of current events from ever reaching their readers.

Today is Earth Day 1990... What will happen 20 years in the future if we don't take strong measures now ...? By 2010, the Earth's temperature will increase five to seven degrees, he said. Even that seemingly small rise will cause a chain reaction of catastrophic proportions that will begin with the melting of the polar icecaps, said Steger, who also led the international trans-Antarctica expedition that monitored damage caused by ozone depletion. Ocean waters will rise from melting ice, endangering coastal regions.... Much of the West Coast - ...- and the Eastern seaboard will be flooded, and parts of...

There's a new cross on display at the old Holy Trinity Church at Marylebone in the heart of London, but the figure dangling from it isn't Jesus; it's a gorilla. Actually, it's a wax sculpture; one of 60 pieces in an exhibit called The Age of the Marvelous. And the church isn't a church either; at least, not any more. Built in 1825, the former Holy Trinity Church is now One Marylebone, a conference center catering to meetings, events and exhibits, large and small.. The very life-like gorilla on a cross was created by artist Paul Fryer with the help...

In her speech in Copenhagen today, First Lady Michelle Obama said her trip to Denmark, along with the travel of her "dear friend" and "chit-chat buddy" Oprah Winfrey, as well as tomorrow's visit by President Obama, is a "sacrifice" on behalf of the children of Chicago and the United States. "As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days," the first lady told a crowd of people involved in the Chicago project, "so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring...

"A team of researchers from the US, Denmark and New Zealand have discovered a process through which a prevalent biogenic nonmethane hydrocarbon compound emitted by trees—isoprene—forms atmospheric particulate matter (i.e., secondary organic aerosol). The results are published in the 7 August issue of the journal Science. Aerosols impact human health, due to their ability to penetrate deep into lungs, and impact Earth’s climate through the scattering and absorption of solar radiation and through serving as the nuclei on which clouds form, noted co-author Prof. John Seinfeld from Caltech. “So it is important to know where particles come from.” Emissions of...

One of the more troubling components of the ObamaCare bill wending its way through the House is the inclusion of individual mandates to carry health insurance. What gives Congress the power to dictate that choice to American citizens? A single document enumerates Congressional power, and former Department of Justice attorneys David Rivkin and Lee Casey have some trouble finding that power in it. They argue, with appropriate citations of precedent, that HR3200 and any other bill that attempts to impose mandates will violate the Constitution: Although the Supreme Court has interpreted Congress’s commerce power expansively, this type of mandate would...

WASHINGTON (Aug. 21) -- A new poll says that Americans, concerned over the future of health care reform and anxious about the growing federal budget deficit, are losing faith in President Barack Obama. The Washington Post-ABC News survey found that less that half of Americans — 49 percent — say they believe the president will make the right decisions for the country. That's down from 60 percent at the 100-day mark of the Obama presidency. The poll published Friday says Obama's overall approval is 57 percent, 12 points lower than it was at its peak in April. Fifty-three percent disapprove...
