The Earth is running a slight fever from greenhouse gases, after enjoying relatively stable temperatures for 2,000 years. The National Academy of Sciences, after reconstructing global average surface temperatures for the past two millennia, said Thursday the data are "additional supporting evidence ... that human activities are responsible for much of the recent warming." Other new research showed that global warming produced about half of the extra hurricane-fueled warmth in the North Atlantic in 2005, and natural cycles were a minor factor, according to Kevin Trenberth and Dennis Shea of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, a research lab sponsored...

Are we going nuts? Is the whole nation suffering from mad cow disease or becoming senile at the ripe young age of 230? Was Chicken Little right? Is the sky falling? Were Copernicus and all former mathematicians wrong? Is 2 and 2 actually relative, anything we want it to be? Have we arrived at some stage in our "evolution" that empowers us to change the very DNA of society, of culture, the structural makeup of the human race? Or are we just too numb – or dumb – to protest the incessant, dogged determination of some lobbying groups to...

Rally at Israeli consulate features pictures of Muslim flags flying over White HouseA New York rally by the Islamic Thinkers Society outside the Israeli consulate yesterday featured chants of "The mushroom cloud is on its way! The real holocaust is on its way!" The demonstration by the Queens-based group was monitored by the Investigative Project on Terrorism whose members noted signs including "Islam will Dominate" and a picture with an Islamic flag flying over the White House. The chants were in Arabic and translated by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, headed by Steve Emerson, a former reporter for CNN. Here...

A few weeks ago, U.S. champion skier Bode Miller turned in a stunningly poor performance at the Olympics, with two non-medal finishes, a disqualification and two incomplete races. Unabashed, he told the Associated Press: "I just did it my way. I'm not a martyr, and I'm not a do-gooder. I just want to go out and rock. And man, I rocked here." Mr. Miller's exuberant self-assessment makes him "a poster child" for "Generation Me," says San Diego State University psychology professor Jean Twenge. Americans born after 1970 -- including the so-called Generation X and Millennial Generation -- have become "an...

LONDON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush allegedly said God told him to invade Iraq and Afghanistan, a new BBC documentary will reveal, according to details. Bush made the claim when he met Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas and then foreign minister Nabil Shaath in June 2003, the ministers told the documentary series to be broadcast in Britain later this month. The US leader also told them he had been ordered by God to create a Palestinian state, the ministers said. Shaath, now the Palestinian information minister, said: " President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a...

Protests have been held in cities across Canada aimed at stopping Ontario province from adopting sharia-based law to settle Muslim family disputes. Ontario is considering a report which recommends that it allow sharia religious arbitration for issues such as divorce and child custody. Opponents say the proposed arbitration process will violate women's' rights. Approval would make Ontario the only western jurisdiction to adopt a form of sharia arbitration. The demonstration outside the Ontario legislature was the focal point for several protests across Canada. Sharia-based laws would be similar to faith-based tribunals already permitted by the Canadian province for Catholics and...

Germany's environment minister has added his voice to green activists and others who have sought to link Hurricane Katrina with global warming. "The increasing frequency of these natural events can only be explained through global warming which is caused by people," Juergen Trittin told the ZDF television network. Trittin, a member of the Green Party in Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's ruling coalition, was also quoted by the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper as criticizing the Bush administration for doing little to fight climate change. Germany is a strong supporter of the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty that came into force last February. The pact...

Krugman's Big LieAugust 20th, 2005 Paul Krugman, the former Enron advisor, New York Times op ed columnist, and presumably in his spare time, “educator” at Princeton, has made a habit of distortion, and half truths in his twice-weekly columns in the “paper of record.” Several website have sprung up to deconstruct each Krugman column, and others respond to specific errors, which are routine. But Krugman's column on Friday, August 19 marks a remarkable descent into outright dishonesty, a new low. What is most astounding is that the dishonesty involves Krugman's deliberately mistaken interpretration of a study in which his own...

NEW YORK -- With its official-looking BBC News banner, the Web site looked real enough, but the sick tale it told seemed too preposterous to be true. "Lion Mutilates 42 Midgets in Cambodian Ring-Fight," blared the headline. An article followed about a circus-like spectacle that went awry and resulted in many deaths. The page was a hoax, but it exploded across the Internet. Soon it was being repeated by bloggers, radio show hosts and a few newspapers. The New York Post published the yarn in its "Weird but True" column on May 20. The episode was another in a string...

Humans are likely responsible for the extinction of Ice Age megafauna—large mammals like giant sloths, short-faced bears, mammoths, and saber-toothed cats—that occurred in the Americas around 11,000 years ago, a new study says. Scientists have long debated whether giant pre-historic mammals disappeared because of climate change or because humans hunted them to extinction. The mass extinctions coincided with both the end of the last Ice Age and the arrival of humans in the Americas around 11,000 years ago. This timing has made it difficult for scientists to isolate the cause of the species' disappearance. But a study comparing the extinction...
