I watched parts of the Democratic presidential debate, then downloaded the transcript. Of all the column fodder it contained, I was particularly taken by two responses of John Edwards that, I believe, fairly represent the Democratic Party's wrongheaded foreign policy worldview. His statements were at the beginning and end of the evening, and served as figurative bookends that nicely frame the Democrats' curious attitude toward this great nation they seek to lead. They tell us all we need to know about these would-be commanders in chief: that we cannot afford to have them anywhere near the Oval Office, especially as...

(Washington, D.C.) - Presidential candidate Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) responded today to Senator John Edwards’s comments that the War on Terror is nothing more than a "bumper sticker slogan." "If Senator Edwards is saying that the war on terror doesn’t exist, I would agree", Congressman Tancredo said. "Terror is a tactic used by the enemy with which we are at war. The enemy is radical Islam, and if he does not believe that, then he is delusional. America can’t afford a president that is an ostrich, with his head in the sand on this issue." Edwards, in a speech to...

The tale of John Edwards’ $400 haircuts may have ended – or at least his campaign hopes it ended – when Mr. Edwards told Iowans on Friday that he was embarrassed by the episode. It arguably began four years ago this weekend with a story in The New York Times about the White House’s strategy for dealing with prospective Democratic challengers to President Bush. In the last paragraph of that story, which I wrote with a colleague, Richard W. Stevenson, an unnamed “Bush associate” was quoted as referring to Mr. Edwards as “the Breck Girl of politics.” Another Bush adviser,...

Americans have given $160 million so far this year to the declared presidential candidates, according to recent candidate filings. [4x-2003-totals] But the great joy of digging into the campaign-finance reports is...learning how they spent it, from the $16,000 John Edwards spent on campaign paraphernalia to Obama's $10,000 on electronic equipment to the McCain's $1,600 on flowers. ... ... Romney: ($21 million raised; $13 million cash on hand.) Romney has raised the most money of any Republican, but he also likes to spend it. That money didn't go to staff perks. Romney, the richest candidate, was stingiest with his staff members'...

The distributor of conservative pundit Ann Coulter’s column, Universal Press Syndicate, has no plans to drop her column despite the flap she created with her recent "faggot” comment. Coulter used the gay slur in reference to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards during a March 2 speech at the American Conservative Union’s Political Action Conference. So far three newspapers that carried her column have announced that they would stop running it, and the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign has launched a letter-writing effort demanding that Universal stop distributing the column. But in a statement, Universal’s president and editor Lee Salem...

First there was John Edwards the book. Now there is John Edwards the movie.Last week, Edwards began posting scenes from the campaign trail on his One America Committee Web site and on YouTube. The camera catches him on planes and in cars, in jeans, and tucking in his shirt as he heads to a teachers' conference in Iowa and a union-sponsored anti-Wal-Mart rally in Pittsburgh."I've come to the conclusion I just want the country to see who I really am -- not based on some plastic Ken Doll you put up in front of audiences."During his 2004 campaign for the vice...

Against the storm-ravaged backdrop of a New Orleans district, John Edwards will this week become the first Democrat heavyweight to announce his 2008 White House run.The declaration by Mr Edwards, a former senator and his party's vice-presidential candidate in 2004, will kick off a season of official announcements in coming weeks by the major contenders for the Democrat and Republican nominations. The choice of New Orleans, where life is barely back to normal 16 months after Hurricane Katrina, is a clear signal that some Democrats will seek to tar rival Republicans with what many see as the Bush administration's inept...
