LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Controversial publisher Judith Regan, whose plan to publish a book by O.J. Simpson called "If I Did It" ignited a firestorm of criticism, was fired for making anti-Semitic remarks in an argument with a colleague, a publishing source said on Monday. The source confirmed a report in The New York Times that said Regan's sudden departure on Friday came after she made the comments in an argument with a Jewish lawyer for HarperCollins, a division of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. empire and the publisher of the Regan Books imprint. The Times said shortly after the remarks...

NEW YORK - The father of "American Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino has filed a $10 million libel suit against the publisher of a book about his daughter, alleging that it contains "false, exaggerated, sensational, intentional and malicious untruths." In papers filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, Joseph Barrino is seeking damages from Simon & Schuster, which released "Fantasia: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale" in 2005. The book was made into a TV movie, starring Fantasia, that aired on the Lifetime network in August. Among the details disputed by Joseph Barrino: that he was hostile to the music...

New York Times Publisher Arthur Sulzberger’s wild left-wing rant at a graduation ceremony in New York... Sulzberger “apologized” to graduates at the State University ...for the failure of his generation to stop the Iraq War and to sufficiently promote “fundamental human rights” like abortion, immigration, and gay marriage... He begins with a facetious “apology” to the class for being part of the generation that let them down due to insufficient liberal activism. “When I graduated in 1974, my fellow students and I ended the Vietnam War and ousted President Nixon. OK. OK. That’s not quite true. Maybe there were larger...

Ostling Associated Press Posted on Fri, Sep. 23, 2005 An interfaith group released a new textbook Thursday aimed at teaching public high school students about the Bible while avoiding legal and religious disputes. The non-profit Bible Literacy Project of Fairfax, Va., spent five years and $2 million developing ``The Bible and Its Influence.'' The textbook, introduced at a Washington news conference, won initial endorsements from experts in literature, religion and church-state law. Dear Freepers, I am a new writer in search of a publisher, and I thought it prudent to post here in the hopes that someone might be able to give me a lead on a publisher or an agent. Shameless, I know, but the query process demands the total abandonment of humility. Please post below or contact me by Freepmail if you are an interested publisher or can point me in the direction of one. General comments are also welcome, of course. I've posted an excerpt from the 45,000 word manuscript, "Ethereal Plain: A 21st Century American Philosophy," below. Essentially,...
  • Former Times Publisher Wins Newspaper Award

SAN FRANCISCO, April 19 - Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, chairman emeritus of The New York Times Company, was awarded the Katharine Graham Lifetime Achievement Award on Tuesday by the Newspaper Association of America at its annual meeting here. The award is named for the late publisher of The Washington Post, to whom it was awarded posthumously in 2002. In presenting the award, Gregg K. Jones, chairman of the association, said Mr. Sulzberger deserved recognition for two main reasons: publishing the Pentagon Papers in 1971 and reinvesting in The Times during the financial crises of the 1960's and 1970's. Mr. Sulzberger, 79,...

VATICAN CITY -- If you're not among the millions who have already read "The Da Vinci Code," an Italian cardinal has a plea for you: Don't read it and don't buy it. Genoa Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who previously was a high-ranking official of the Vatican's office on doctrinal orthodoxy, told Vatican Radio on Tuesday that the runaway success of the Dan Brown novel is proof of "anti-Catholic" prejudice. Allegations in the novel that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and has descendants have outraged many Christians and have been dismissed by historians and theologians.

[Photo: David Mayes] Government, the media, and each citizen "must insist" that there be more constructive communication, the publisher of The New York Times said this morning during his Landon Lecture. Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said that "too many news outlets enjoy their roles in the political theater of the absurd" that's hampering thoughtful debate about the nation's problems — and leading to widespread cynicism about news and the political process. The dogs and their owner shared the kind of bond only dog-lovers know, and Welton says the dogs gave Terry peace in his final moments. They came to visit him...

PRAGUE, Czech Republic - The publisher of a Czech translation of Hitler's "Mein Kampf" received a three-year suspended sentence Wednesday on charges of promoting Nazism, Czech radio reported. In 2000 Michal Zitko published a Czech-language edition of the book in which Hitler expressed his hatred of Jews and desire to conquer territory in Eastern Europe. He received a three-year suspended sentence in 2001 on charges of promoting Nazism. The sentence, however, was overturned by a higher court, which ruled that the first trial had been riddled by procedural errors. Last August, a district court in Prague again found Zitko guilty,...

I received this book in my mail box today. The mailing address was a generic "Postal Patron" much like most junk mail. The title of the book is "National Sunday Law" and is credited to someone named A. Jan Marcussen. The book is 94 pages including a bibliography. A quick scan of the book leads me to believe that this book is a mix of twisted Christian theology (including bible verse references) with some pretty paranoid political fears. Cover

But now Ed and Lois Smart and Doubleday, publisher of the upcoming book, are claiming the project has been kidnaped -- after CBS betrayed them by airing an unauthorized one-hour "news" special last Saturday night! <p>HILLARY Clinton's memoir "Living History" earned the junior Senator an $8 million advance, but some say it cost 75 employees at Simon & Schuster their jobs. Just weeks after S&S published Clinton's autobio, the publisher laid off 75 employees. A company rep says "there's no connection" between Clinton's fat payday and the mass layoffs, but the New York Press begs to differ. The paper points out that even if Clinton manages to sell 1.5 million copies - 1.2 million have been sold since June 9 and sales are slipping rapidly - the publisher can't possibly make back the money it lavished on her. Of course, S&S can dole out whatever obscene sums it wants, but, the paper notes, it "should be known that the result of the overpayment . . . is that 75 men and women no longer have jobs."</p>

Publisher Lied About Hillary Book Sales June 16, 2003 Here are some facts to smash the myths on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's new book: There were not a million printed. There were not 200,000 sold on the first day. There was not a "leak" to the Associated Press of the book's content. Hillary's publisher, Simon & Schuster, sent the data on Bill and Monica to AP. What Is Knopf Waiting For? By Jerome Sternstein Mr. Sternstein is Professor Emeritus of History, Brooklyn College, CUNY, and co-editor of The Encyclopedia of American Biography. Early in 2002, Jane Garrett, Michael Bellesiles's editor at Alfred A. Knopf, told Danny Postel of the Chronicle of Higher Education that the publisher "stands behind" Arming America despite everything the book's critics had to say about its scholarly failings. "I realize that he made some errors," Garrett admitted, "but they certainly were not made intentionally. They were the result of some over-quick research," she said, adding that Knopf was "satisfied" with what Bellesiles...

Most Americans are so steeped in egalitarian thinking that they like to delude themselves that they share in running the country. We ordinary folks, in fact, don't run the country and have a slim-to-none chance of even influencing its direction. Thomas R. Dye, a professor at Florida State University, has made a study of power. Since power in our country resides in institutions, he defines individuals with power as those who occupy the top positions in the government and in corporate, legal, educational, civic and cultural institutions. He found that there are only about 7,000 of these positions in the...
