In 2020, our nation’s economy was booming. Then everything came to halt when COVID came to us from China. The country went into lockdown in an effort to “slow the spread,” sending unemployment levels skyrocketing to historic highs. But thanks to President Trump’s Operation Warp Speed, the federal government authorized three vaccines in record time and the lockdowns ended. Yet a year later, our nation has yet to recover the jobs it lost, as incentives to remain unemployed predictably kept people from going back to work. But four states have managed to see a full recovery of the jobs lost...

Public-health messaging from the beginning of this pandemic has had very little to say about immunity acquired following infection. But for most people, it is a real and pressing concern, and not only because of the vaccine mandates that have little or no regard for it. People want to know whether once recovered they can be confident of not getting it again.Must everyone live in fear forever or is there a basis for the recovered to live with confidence? We have looked at the published evidence and can conclude based on the existing body of evidence, that reinfections are very rare,...

And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us. Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye. And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. And he answered, I will go. So he went with them. And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood. But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell...

President Biden on Wednesday touted the number of unemployment insurance claims, stating that the number represents one of the strongest jobs recoveries ever. “Today, we received further evidence that our jobs recovery is one of the strongest ever. The average number of Americans filing for unemployment over the last four weeks is now at its lowest level since 1969,” Biden said in a statement. The four-week moving average for claims fell by 16,000 to 203,750, the lowest level since Nov. 15, 1969. New applications for jobless aide rose slightly last week, totaling 206,000, an increase of 18,000 from the previous...

New York City is already struggling to regain the jobs it lost amid the COVID-19 pandemic — but fears are now mounting that Gov. Kathy Hochul’s new mask mandate could slow the Big Apple’s recovery even more. The city’s current unemployment rate of 9.4 percent is more than double the national average of 4.2 percent, new state and federal data shows. While the US added nearly 6 million jobs in the last year, the latest state data shows the Big Apple’s economic recovery lagged considerably with just 174,000 jobs regained in the 12 months through October. The absence of visitors...

Jen Psaki Confronted With Poor Jobs Report Live On MSNBC, Says She Can’t Comment Right Away"Well, I know this sounds a little archaic, but I can't comment on them until 9:30, by rules, because I work at the White House," Psaki responded. "What I will say is people can expect the president to continue to say, today, month to month, is that what we’re seeing are good trends, that we are continuing to put people back to work, that we are continuing to see participation in the workforce, that we are continuing to see the unemployment rate go down, but...

An elderly COVID-19 patient has recovered after a court order allowed him to be treated with ivermectin, despite objections from the hospital in which he was staying, according to the family’s attorney. After an Illinois hospital insisted on administering expensive remdesivir to the patient and the treatment failed, his life was saved after a court ordered that an outside medical doctor be allowed to use the inexpensive ivermectin to treat him, over the hospital’s strenuous objections.Ivermectin tablets have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat humans with intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis, two conditions caused by parasitic...

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday warned senators that failing to reach a deal on raising the debt limit could "eviscerate" the U.S. economy recovery. Yellen gave this message while addressing the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. She has issued similar notices in the time since the Senate reached a short-term debt hike to last until Dec. 15. Speaking to the committee, Yellen noted November job numbers that showed around 531,000 were added in the past month and stated, "Our economic recovery is on track."

At least eight people are dead after a crowd surge during the sold-out Astroworld music festival in Houston on Friday, the city's fire chief said. Seventeen people were transported to the hospital after the crush, and 11 who were taken by ambulance were in cardiac arrest, Houston officials said. In all, more than 300 people were treated throughout the event Friday at an on-site field hospital. Around 9:15 p.m. local time (10:15 p.m. ET) "the crowd began to compress toward the front of the stage," Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a news conference early Saturday. "That caused some panic,...

Economic growth slowed sharply between July and September as the emergence of the delta variant derailed the recovery from the coronavirus recession, according to data released Thursday by the Commerce Department. U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 2 percent in the third quarter, according to the Census Bureau’s first estimate. The economy grew at a 6.7 percent yearly pace in the second quarter of 2021, marking a sharp slowdown as the delta surge began. “The increase in third quarter GDP reflected the continued economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. A resurgence of COVID-19 cases resulted...

Florida has recovered more than 960,000 of the around 1.3 million jobs that were lost at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to state officials. The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) said in a recent statement that the state has recovered 964,400 jobs of those lost when the pandemic struck last spring, which threw the economy into a tailspin and led to a sharp rise in unemployment. The Sunshine State economy now remains just over 315,000 jobs short of pre-pandemic levels, said Jerry Parrish, chief economist at the Florida Chamber of Commerce.“We still have a few to go to get...

Job openings in the United States surged to a record high of more than 10 million in June, while hiring lagged behind that figure by over 3 million, painting a picture of an economic recovery held back by a labor shortage as businesses struggle to find workers. The Labor Department’s Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), released Aug. 9, showed that the number of job vacancies jumped by 590,000 to 10.1 million on the last day of June, led by gains in professional and business services, retail trade, and accommodation and food services.“This is by far the record amount of...

New York (CNN Business)The planned grand reopening of offices across America is in serious doubt because of the Delta variant. In the past 24 hours, a slew of major companies have told employees they will no longer be expected back at their desks in September. Notably, that list includes BlackRock (BLK), Wells Fargo (CBEAX) and other Wall Street firms that had been eager to turn the page on the era of virtual work. The shift by these business leaders makes perfect sense. Many workers are nervous about returning to crowded offices and subway stations at a time when Covid-19 cases...

Am looking for experiences from Freepers that have had covid-19. I have put this up one other time, Freepers are not here all of the time and browsing habits can vary. If you have already answered please disregard this post. I will publish the results from both polls, removing the top 10% and the bottom 10%. I had it with my wife and 5 kids in February. Thank you for your time and be blessed! Founded PS: I should probably do one on vaccines and reactions as well, in time.

“Our company has had to deal with import delays due to backlogged West Coast ports, higher domestic freight costs, and a labor shortage at distribution centers that has prompted wage increases. Earlier this year, we thought, or maybe we hoped, that some of the industry wide supply-chain issues would have started to settle down by now. But that clearly hasn’t happened. In fact, the whole global supply situation seems to have gotten maybe even a little bit worse.”John Crimmins, chief financial officer of Burlington Stores Inc., 5/27/21 Crimmins’s observation summarizes how business costs are driving persistent inflation due to multiple...

Surface Transportation Board (STB) Chairman Martin Oberman yesterday asked all Class Is to provide an update on their preparedness to meet service demand as the nation continues to recovery economically from the COVID-19 pandemic. In a May 27 letter sent to Class I chief executives, Oberman expressed concern that recent rail service problems — as reported by some shippers — might relate to a broader trend of rail labor reductions over the past several years, in addition to the furloughs and quarantines brought about by the pandemic. Oberman also asked the CEOs to provide information about the sufficiency of operating...

The U.S. economy peaked in late 2019 at $21 trillion. We are now remarkably 98 percent back to where we were before the terrible COVID-19 pandemic slammed these shores 14 months ago. This rebound is one of the outstanding U.S. achievements in history. Since June of last year, the economy has rocketed by 34 percent in quarter 3 of 2020, 4.2 percent in quarter 4 of 2020 and now 6.4 percent in the first three months of 2021. So far in this current quarter, growth is more than 10 percent.Almost no one expected this. The Federal Reserve Board, the Congressional...

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen cautioned Friday that the U.S. faces a “long road” to economic recovery but described the latest jobs report from the Department of Labor as an indication the country is making progress. “We knew it would be a long road back to the recovery. That’s why the legislation provided lasting support rather than just a few months of relief. We knew this would not be a 100-day battle,” Yellen said at a White House press briefing. “Today’s jobs report underscores the long haul climb back to recovery.” The U.S. economy added 266,000 jobs during the month of...
