PARIS, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Rioters ran amok across central Paris on Saturday, torching cars and buildings, looting shops, smashing windows and clashing with police in the worst unrest in more than a decade, posing a dire challenge to Emmanuel Macron's presidency. The authorities were caught off guard by the escalation in violence after two weeks of nationwide protests against fuel taxes and living costs, known as the "yellow vest" movement after fluorescent jackets kept in all vehicles in France. In Paris, police said they had arrested almost 300 people while 110 were injured, including 20 members of the security...

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, will hold an emergency meeting of senior ministers on Sunday after central Paris saw its worst unrest in a decade on Saturday. Thousands of masked protesters fought running battles with police, set fire to cars, banks and houses and burned makeshift barricades on the edges of demonstrations against fuel tax rises. On Sunday morning, Paris authorities hired extra trucks to begin removing the carcasses of burnt cars on from the scorched pavements of some of Paris’s most expensive streets, amid graffiti calling for Macron to resign. ... Macron, who has staked his political identity on...

Being mayor of Portland, Ore., may have gotten to Ted Wheeler. On Thursday, after finishing a speech at the Oregon Health Forum in which he was heckled, Wheeler mumbled, “I can’t wait for the next 24 months to be over,” indicating he may not seek re-election, the Oregonian reported. (TWEET-AT-LINK) "If you know me, you know I mutter quite a bit,” Wheeler said in a statement issued later in the day. “Not one of my most redeeming qualities. I will make a decision next year with my family if I am running for re-election." In previous media interviews, Wheeler has...

Saturday, in Pittsburgh, a Sabbath celebration at the Tree of Life synagogue became the site of the largest mass murder of Jews in U.S. history. Eleven worshippers were killed by a racist gunman. Friday, we learned the identity of the crazed criminal who mailed pipe bombs to a dozen leaders of the Democratic Party, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. From restaurants to Capitol corridors, this campaign season we have seen ugly face-offs between leftist radicals and Republican senators. Are we more divided than we have ever been? Are our politics more poisoned? Are we living in what...

An independent journalist who videotaped a mob of antifa rioters destroying property in Berkeley, Ca., on Sunday described on Fox News how they threatened him into backing off.“They basically confronted me, and said, ‘Get out of here, the police aren’t here, so they can’t help you,’" Ford Fischer told host Sandra Smith Monday evening on Fox's “The Story.”Fischer, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of livestreaming service News2Share, was in Berkeley to cover the “No to Marxism” rally and counter demonstrations led by communist and antifa groups. He told Smith that he followed a group of "Black Bloc" antifa rioters after they broke...

Zehut party chairman and former MK Moshe Feiglin gave full backing to his son Avi, a soldier in the Kfir Brigade who uploaded a Facebook post calling to refuse orders that place soldiers’ lives in danger so as to minimize harm to Arab rioters. Following the post, Avi was tried and dismissed from his combat position. "My son Avi received 10 days conditional imprisonment and was removed from combat duties, but I want to tell you that he is doing the greatest fighting that is required today," Feiglin said in a response. "What he did in the last 24 or...

Clinton aide called Comey 'a bad choice' for FBI director, leaked emails reveal WASHINGTON ? A senior aide to Hillary Clinton privately dismissed FBI Director James Comey as "a bad choice" in October 2015, according to hacked emails published Thursday. The blunt assessment foreshadowed the dramatic tension that has escalated between Comey and the Democratic presidential candidate in the final days before the election. Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri forwarded to colleagues a news article in which the FBI director suggested that crime could be rising because police officers were becoming less aggressive as a result of the "Ferguson effect,"...

It can't happen here. That’s more than just the title of a suddenly highly relevant Sinclair Lewis novel about the rise of an American dictator, written in 1935 — another era when despots were on people’s minds, for some weird reason. No, “it can’t happen here” long been the national motto of a United States of America that has long thought itself immune to the slings and arrows of everyone else’s world history. An authoritarian president with nothing but contempt for 242 years of democratic norms, a free press, and a judicial system untainted by political interference? It can’t happen...

The Gulf Arab state of Qatar has called on Israel to issue thousands of entry permits to Gazans living in the Hamas-ruled Strip, allowing them to work in Israel, arguing that such a move would reduce tensions and end the ongoing wave of “kite terrorism” and balloon bomb attacks. Since March 30th, tens of thousands of Gaza rioters have gathered on the Israel border, clashing with IDF forces and attempting to breach the security fence. In recent weeks, however, the rioters have shifted from direct attacks on the border to the use of improvised explosive or incendiary devices, attached to...

Because of the ever-descending moral and intellectual state of the mainstream news media, there has been no outcry against the leftists who call President Donald Trump and all Americans who support him Nazis. Indeed, members of the media now regularly do so. Without that outcry, this labeling will only increase; and this steadily increasing drumbeat of hysteria is likely to lead to one result: violence against conservatives. It is not plausible to foresee any other outcome of left-wing normalization of the terms “Nazi” and “white supremacist.” The American left has put itself in a moral quandary: Either it doesn’t mean...

After sacrificing fifty of their prized terrorists in their latest stunt to discredit Israel in the past week, was it really worth it to Gaza's Hamas rulers? Based on at least one surprising press account describing the phony staged event, it looks as if the trick fell flat. Get a load of what the liberal-lefty, hoity-toity, Euro-infused Economist is reporting about it: Every state has a right to defend its borders. To judge by the numbers, Israel's army may well have used excessive force. But any firm conclusion requires an independent assessment of what happened, where and when. The Israelis sometimes used non-lethal means, such as...

Four men accused of participating in a chaotic anti-capitalism march during President Trump’s inauguration went on trial Wednesday, facing possible decades behind bars for their alleged role in a window-smashing spree that ended in a mass arrest. The men were arrested alongside about 230 other people on January 20, 2017, several blocks north of Trump’s inaugural parade route, after police cornered largely black-clad participants, journalists, and legal observers on a downtown street corner. Three of the defendants allegedly took a direct role in vandalism, and another allegedly knew of plans for mayhem. Defense attorneys claimed mistaken identity and collective punishment...

True, and no other country in the region would be expected to act with restraint. Good luck to any Yemenis “protesting†at the Saudi border, for instance. There’d be 10 times as many shot and the UN wouldn’t blink. Her quote about the kite-flying Hamas “protester†is also accurate, although she neglected to mention what else he said. On @NPR, @NPRinskeep just asked a Gazan with a kite w a swastika on it what it means to him. "The Jews go crazy when you mention Hitler." Steve Inskeep asked if he knows the Israelis are using the swastikas to discredit...
