Based on new information, CDC is advising that consumers not eat and retailers not sell any romaine lettuce harvested from the Salinas, California growing region. Most romaine lettuce products are labeled with a harvest location showing where they were grown. This advice includes all types of romaine lettuce harvested from Salinas, California such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, and packages of precut lettuce and salad mixes which contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar salad.

A report says that President Donald Trump and his family were not served any romaine lettuce during their Thanksgiving dinner. U.S. health officials have warned that romaine has been linked to an outbreak of E. coli that has left about three dozen people sickened in several states. The White House told NBC News that the menu at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, included Caesar salad, but it had no romaine. Romaine is the typical base of Caesar salad.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday said the public should not eat romaine lettuce as a result of a multistate E. coli outbreak.

Romaine lettuce is unsafe to eat in any form, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday in a broad alert in response to a new outbreak of illnesses caused by a particularly dangerous type of E. coli contamination. The CDC told consumers to throw away any romaine lettuce they may already have purchased. Restaurants should not serve it, stores should not sell it, and people should not buy it, no matter where or when the lettuce was grown. It doesn’t matter if it is chopped, whole head or part of a mix. All romaine should be avoided.

The Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service says the products, distributed by Caito Foods, have come into contact with lettuce contaminated with cyclospora. The parasite causes intestinal illnesses with flu-like symptoms and other ailments, which can last up to several months. The USDA says Caito Foods was notified from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine used in some of the salads was being recalled. The products affected by the recall have best-by dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.
