Police said the shooting took place at around 4:50 p.m. at the A/C Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets station — which houses the NYPD’s 30th transit precinct. A person of interest was taken into custody, the NYPD said, adding a gun was recovered at the scene. The victim was brought to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition, cops said. A subway car at the station was “covered with blood and ballistics” when police arrived, a source said. It wasn’t immediately clear what sparked the violence, which...

When the 66 Express Lanes opened a year ago, officials promised the tolls would mean a smoother ride on the interstate, a major east-west thoroughfare from Northern Virginia into the District that is infamous for its headache-inducing congestion. The state’s promise — less congestion and faster travel times during rush hour — has been fulfilled for many commuters able to pay or carpool, but the new toll system has had an adverse effect for many of the remaining road users. For some commuters, the rush-hour period has simply shifted later — outside the toll hours — and dumped them onto...

Dive Brief: The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the completion of the state's first-ever diverging diamond interchange (DDI), located on Interstate 70, according to Equipment World. The DDI design eliminates left turns across oncoming traffic, improving vehicle flow and decreasing the chance of accidents. The agency also chose the DDI configuration because it could use the former interchange's cloverleaf footprint, reducing the impact of construction on the area. PennDOT said it modified the traditional DDI design slightly. Dive Insight: Design is one way transportation agencies are combating gridlock resulting from increased traffic. Other tools in DOT arsenals are...

Hina Alvi is the wife of Imran Awan, and both face charges of conspiracy and bank fraud. Both worked for Democrats for several years, and Awan worked directly for Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., when she was chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. A document filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia indicates that federal prosecutors have struck a...

It's crazy right now" Dozens of commuters ran out of a crowded Manhattan subway station Tuesday morning after one straphanger thought someone claimed to have a gun, according to the NYPD. Straphangers stampeded out of the Central Park North - 110th Street subway station in Harlem at about 9 a.m. in what police are calling mass hysteria. Authorities said the commotion spurred from a fight between two people on a 2 train. It's not clear what led straphangers to believe someone...

A Silver Spring man convicted of falsifying immigration documents had threatened to blow up the White House, the U.S. Treasury building, a federal courthouse and a Metro stop, vowing to "slaughter the enemies of Islam," federal prosecutors said Monday in court. Lajqi, an ethnic Albanian who came to the United States through Mexico in the mid-1980s, is a self-described "extremist militant," who said he was trained by Bosnian Muslim rebels, according to court papers. He was angry about American military involvement in Kosovo in the 1990s, and "blamed all Albanian deaths in Kosovo on the United States," the court papers...

Apparently, the No. 1 mid-August movie hit in the U.S. is not going to make it to the big screen in China. The communist Chinese government has tagged Jackie Chan's "Rush Hour 3" with a "fundamentally anti-Chinese" label and banned the big box-office hit. Chinese officials claim to be upset with a family that is depicted in the film as having links to organized crime. It could be the real reason the Chi-coms are peeved is the fact that Chan is living proof that dreams really do come true — in a free market, that is. The action movie comic...

Lefties launch 'Move over' campaign By: Dave Downey - Commentary Sunday, June 17, 2007 Look out, all you left-lane campers. Soon, you could be approached from behind by an impatient commuter with the words "move over" and a giant arrow pointed in the direction of the No. 2 lane pasted across his or her windshield. Those drivers who routinely get irritated when you create those mile-long backups now have a polite way of communicating with you. For $29, they can buy their very own "move over" windshield decals through the Web site leftlanedrivers.org. The site was set up earlier this...

WARRENTON, Ga. (AP) Chris Tucker has pleaded guilty to speeding and eluding police during a brief car chase last month. The actor told authorities he didn't hear their sirens because he was on his way to church. Tucker, 32, entered the pleas Tuesday in Warren County Probate Court and paid a fine of $6,999, court clerk Jeremy Moore said Thursday. Tucker was driving a Bentley at 109 mph on Interstate 20 on April 17 when Georgia State Patrol troopers attempted to pull him over, Moore said. The speed limit on that stretch of road is 70 mph. The pursuit lasted...

A new study by a team of German researchers suggests that commuting could be hazardous to your health. The study found an increased risk in having a heart attack, within two hours of being in traffic. Interestingly, patients who had taken the bus or ridden a bike were even more likely to have an attack. The research team, led by Annette Peters of the National Research Center for Environment and Health in Neuherberg, looked at 691 people who suffered a heart attack between 1999 and 2001. They found that nearly one in 12 attacks was linked to being stuck in...

May 22, 2002 Lots of Seats, but Sorry, This Car's TakenBy RANDY KENNEDY t sounds like the dream of an Amtrak rider the night after a really bad trip home. The rider paces the platform at Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan, looking into cars, finding every seat full, the aisles packed with angry standees. Then at the end of the train, a vision: a car incredibly, miraculously, half empty! There are seats! Everyone inside looks almost happy! It is a suburban commuter's Shangri-La! Like many sweet dreams, this one will end in frustration, however, just as it does in the waking...
