Human skeletal remains -- possibly belonging to Revolutionary War soldiers who fought in the Battle of Ridgefield in 1777 -- were discovered under the foundation of an early 18th-century house last week. The Connecticut Office of State Archaeology was notified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner about the find on Dec. 2. Subsequent excavations by the state archaeologist Nicholas Bellantoni, with assistance from the Friends of the Office of State Archaeology, Inc. and University of Connecticut graduate students, have yielded two more skeletons. "One has been completely excavated already and is in the medical examiner's office and we're...

The California-based broadcaster's digital acquisitions have turned heads, but the company's revenues primarily come from 116 radio stations in 39 markets. In 2019, with a soft advertising market and a big-tech duopoly that isn't letting up, the digital media landscape is largely bereft of hungry buyers. But in late March, radio giant Salem Media Group quietly disclosed the purchase of a sixth digital media company, PJ Media, for just $100,000. Salem's conservative-leaning digital arm, Townhall Media, which includes right-leaning sites like HotAir and RedState, now reaches more than 15 million unique visitors a month, and is a "nicely profitable business,"...

SALEM, Mass. (AP) — The Satanic Temple says it’s been designated a church by the Internal Revenue Service. The Salem, Massachusetts-based organization provided The Associated Press with a notice it recently received communicating its new tax-exempt status. The letter used a code that classifies it as a “church or a convention or association of churches.” The group is now listed in an IRS database for tax-exempt organizations. An email seeking comment was sent to the IRS.

BRENTWOOD, NH (WMUR/CNN) - A New Hampshire homeowner is under court order to clean up his yard that's littered with thousands of boxes. If he doesn’t, the town will do it for him and stick him with the bill. Meanwhile, his neighbors are hoping their community will finally go back to normal. Michael Bates found himself back in court after failing to clean up his property in Salem, MA. The town estimates that there are some 2,000 boxes containing printers in the yard.

SALEM—Governor Ralph Northam today announced amendments to Senate Bill 1716 and House Bill 2718, legislation passed by the General Assembly providing $151 million in dedicated funding for the Interstate 81 Corridor Improvement Plan. The amendments would ensure that the $2 billion program approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) in December 2018 is implemented, while also generating critical revenue for interstates across the Commonwealth. The amendments create equity in transportation funding by bringing Virginia’s truck registration fees, and diesel and road tax rates more in line with those of the other states along the 855-mile I-81 corridor. The funding mechanisms...

Linn County Commissioners Roger Nyquist, John Lindsey and Will Tucker were unanimous Tuesday morning in their opposition to a proposal by Rep. Paul Evans, D-Monmouth, to create a multi-county taxing district supporting construction of a bridge over the Willamette River in Salem. Evans introduced House Bill 2974 on Friday. It would create a Capital Region Special Bridge District and would exact taxes from residents from Polk, Marion, Linn and Yamhill and possibly Benton counties. The proposal is aimed at spreading the cost of bridges regionally since residents of several counties work in Salem. Nyquist was traveling and participated by telephone....

Jamal Khashoggi’s op-eds published in the very influential Washington Post certainly qualify as attempts to change U.S. policy against Saudi Arabia and in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Washington Post has caused itself a major scandal since it has come to light they and their martyred “reformer” Jamal Khashoggi were publishing anti-Saudi propaganda for Qatar. They tried to bury this in a pre-Christmas Saturday news dump, but that can’t stop the damage this will do to their reputation.“Text messages between Khashoggi and an executive at Qatar Foundation International show that the executive, Maggie Mitchell Salem, at times shaped the...

A multi-disciplinary team of scientists has a new theory for why all human civilization abruptly ended on the banks of the Dead Sea some 3,700 years ago. According to analyzed archaeological evidence, the disaster of biblical proportions can be explained by a massive explosion, similar to one recorded over 100 years ago in Russia. […] As reported in Science News, at the recently concluded Denver-based ASOR Annual Meeting, director of scientific analysis at Jordan’s Tall el-Hammam Excavation Project Phillip J. Silvia presented a paper, “The 3.7kaBP Middle Ghor Event: Catastrophic Termination of a Bronze Age Civilization” during a session on...

state of emergency has been declared in parts of Salem, Oregon, after toxins were found in tap water. Oregon Governor Kate Brown issued the declaration for Marion and Polk Counties and the National Guard will deliver water via 2,000-gallon tankers to 10 water stations in the state capital. Other cities affected include Turner and Stayton. Small amounts of cyanotoxins were found in the Detroit Reservoir on Tuesday, deriving from algae bloom in Detroit Lake that have appeared in water sources throughout the Pacific Northwest. However some expressed anger at the delay in the state of emergency announcement. One unnamed pregnant...

Conservative outlet RedState fired most of its staff Friday while its owner, Salem Media, froze the site, citing an inability to "no longer support the entire roster of writers and editors." "The site name will linger, but RedState is all but dead now. I have invited the fired writers here," Erick Erickson, a RedState founder who left the site in 2015, wrote in a blog post. Fired staffers said the cuts focused on writers who have been critical of President Trump. RedState had often distinguished itself since 2016 as a home for Trump critics within the GOP. RedState staffers were...

The Satanic Temple might be the religion for 2017. On a quiet New England street, just steps from a yoga studio, a giant wicker sculpture of Baphomet — a demonic entity often associated with Satan — looked down on passersby. The statue is perched upon a historic colonial-style house, filled with occult and diabolical-themed art. And that house is the national headquarters of The Satanic Temple, a national organization that’s equal parts performance art group, leftist activist organization, and anti-religion religious movement. The house, which opened to the public in 2016, doubles as an art gallery. Each room is filled...

FULL TITLE: Salem witch trial victims are honored in two different communities on the 325th anniversary of the tragedy Two communities in Massachusetts where 20 people suspected of witchcraft were put to death in 1692 honored the victims on Wednesday. BELOIT — Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday signaled he’s open to charging tolls on Wisconsin’s Interstates, but with a key condition: linking it to a reduction in the state’s 30.9-cent-per-gallon gas tax. Walker also said an impasse over the state’s next transportation budget risks costly delays to billion-dollar highway projects now under construction. That includes a $1.2 billion expansion of Interstate 39-90 from the Madison area to the Illinois state line. The Interstate formed the backdrop for Walker’s remarks in a press conference at a Beloit rest stop. Republicans who control the state Assembly have proposed seeking federal approval to...

**SNIP** A billboard last month went up reading, "Real men provide. Real women appreciate it." That's now been replaced by a longer message titled "Much ado about nothing" that mocks those who took offense to the original message. It goes on to say "A social experiment that brought forth those so immersed in their own insecurity that in the mirror they could only see an angry victim of their incorrect interpretation of a silly billboard -- Bless their hearts."

It’s a hot summer night, and leaders of the Satanic Temple have gathered in the crimson-walled living room of a Victorian manse in this city renowned for its witch trials in the 17th century. They’re watching a sepia-toned video, in which children dance around a maypole, a spider crawls across a clown’s face and eerie, ambient chanting gives way to a backward, demonic voice-over. The group chuckles with approval. They’re here plotting to bring their wisdom to the nation’s public elementary school children. They point out that Christian evangelical groups already have infiltrated the lives of America’s children through after-school...

Just a note: We often think of the men who conducted the Salem witch trials. They were the judges and jurors. But they weren't the accusers. The accusers were a nine year old girl, an eleven year old girl, and a twelve year old girl. It's important to remember that. Young people, especially young girls in a male-dominated society, may feel powerless. And may feel more acutely any ambient paranoia in a community. Immature people of all genders and ages might be prone to this. Lodging a hysterical accusation suddenly makes the powerless powerful, and the marginally noticed suddenly the...

I invite FReepers to discuss what they know about Salem Media and Salem Cimmunications. From what I can find out, they are owned by the GOPe and in turn own Mark Levin, Beck and Erikson and probably Limbaugh. It is chilling to see our "heroes@ cheer on our disenfranchisement. The conservative treehouse is a small venue, but would appear to be on top of this issue.

How did Salem, Massachusetts become a Halloween destination? For centuries, the New England town avoided any association with its infamous Puritan ancestors, who executed 19 people under suspicion of practicing witchcraft. The surprising answer, author Stacy Schiff writes for The New York Times, has a lot to do with the sitcom "Bewitched." These days, Salem is rife with kitschy witches and Halloween attractions. But before the late 20th century, town citizens rarely acknowledged the Puritan trials. When playwright Arthur Miller visited Salem to research "The Crucible" in 1952, locals refused to help him. "You couldn't get anyone to say anything...
