Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-HI) says her constituents are "frustrated and embarrassed" by Hawaii's failed Obamacare exchange, which cost taxpayers $204 million and signed up only 8,000 people. On Wednesday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) announced it will launch an investigation into Hawaii's busted Obamacare program. "This is not a partisan issue, this is an economic issue," said state Sen. Sam Slom. Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie previously predicted "hundreds of thousand of people" would sign up for Obamacare in the President's home state. On Thursday, President Barack Obama tried to rally Democrats to support his unpopular Obamacare program. "I think Democrats...

Hawaii State Senator Sam Slom said that questioning the president about his birth certificate is legitimate. State Sen. Slom hasn’t seen evidence of an Obama Birth Certificate but says it is possible that the president was born in Hawaii. The problem according to Sen. Slom is what is actually on the president’s documents. Apparently, there is something on his records so adverse to the presidency that he doesn’t want the American people to see and that has caused him to hide his records including but not limited to; school, college, original passport and Illinois state senator records. The lone Republican in the Hawaii State Senate was interviewed on the radio this morning, explaining that while believes Barack Obama was born in the Aloha State, he questions what might be on the original, long-form birth certificate that would prompt the president to go to such lengths to conceal it. "I'm not a 'birther,'" Hawaii State Sen. Sam Slom told Jeff Katz of WXKS Radio in Boston, "and I followed this from the very beginning. At first I followed it with amusement, and then I got really concerned about it, because the question was if it was not just...

Hawaii's Senate minority leader is accusing Gov. Neil Abercrombie of politicizing the state's health department by firing his nominee to replace Chiyome Fukino, a woman best known to the nation as Barack Obama's birth certificate guardian. Sen. Sam Slom, the sole Republican in Hawaii's upper house, is denouncing Abercrombie's handling of the nomination of Dr. Neal Palafox to be the successor to Fukino as director of the state's health department. He said he is convinced Abercrombie asked Dr. Palafox to withdraw his nomination because the nominee fired two Hawaii health department employees who were politically connected. "Palafox was determined to...

HONOLULU -- In Hawaii, there are 25 members of the state Senate. Twenty-four are Democrats. And then there is Sam Slom. Slom, the lone Senate Republican in the state of President Obama's birth, has represented East Honolulu since 1996. He hasn't always been the only GOP senator; in the last session, there were two. But Republicans fared poorly at the polls in November, and Slom was left alone. Which means that Democratic bills to increase state spending, to impose new regulations and mandates, and to create new government departments are often passed on votes of 24-1. "I represent a point...
  • Late Hawaii Rep. Mink May Win Vote

Filed at 4:12 p.m. ET HONOLULU (AP) -- Democrats expect Rep. Patsy Mink to win re-election in Hawaii next month -- even though she died Sept. 28. Then comes another election for the seat. And then maybe another. The Republican candidate, ex-Marine Bob McDermott, has been feuding with party leaders and has received virtually no support from a state GOP that had discounted his chances of beating Mink. But controversy over the scheduling of as many as three rapid-fire elections for her district is giving Republicans new hope for the longtime Democratic seat. On Nov. 5, voters in the 2nd...
