A German snack bar owner is preparing for the worst — or is it wurst — in a spat with authorities over the sale of sausages at a highway rest stop. Christina Wagner has been battling to sell bratwursts by the Autobahn near the town of Rodaborn for years. Authorities refused to give Wagner a permit to operate at the site, so she passes sausages to her customers through a fence from an adjacent lot.

Kyrgyz were variously enraged and bemused after a British expat working at a foreign-owned gold mine jokingly compared a beloved local equine delicacy to a "horses (member)" (sic). But the Facebook jest by Michael McFeat -- a welding superintendent at the Kumtor Gold Company in Kyrgyzstan -- could scarcely have come at a worse time for his Canadian bosses, whose relations with Bishkek are at an all-time low. The mine's owners have recently been locked in a fierce battle with the Kyrgyz government over fresh mining permits and a redivision of profits from an enterprise that generates around 10 percent...

The World Health Organisation (WHO) will publish a report on Monday on the dangers of eating processed meats. It is expected to list processed meat as a cancer-causing substance, while fresh red meat is also expected to be regarded as bad for health, the Daily Mail said. The classifications, by the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer, are believed to regard processed meat as "carcinogenic to humans", the highest of five possible rankings, shared with alcohol, asbestos, arsenic and cigarettes.

Oxford University Press Bans Use Of Pig, Sausage Or Pork-Related Words To Avoid Offending Muslims 14 Jan 2015 The Oxford University Press has warned its writers not to mention pigs, sausages or pork-related words in children's books, in an apparent bid to avoid offending Jews and Muslims. The existence of the publisher's guidelines emerged after a radio discussion on free speech in the wake of the Paris attacks. Speaking on Radio 4's Today programme, presenter Jim Naughtie said: "I've got a letter here that was sent out by OUP to an author doing something for young people. "Among the things...

Dozens drop by to watch, have some sausageThe record for the longest bierwurst sausage already set last year will be broken by Queen City Sausage, the same folks who set it last year. Dozens of people came down to Fountain Square around lunch time to witness the record-breaking attempt. The old record of 200 feet, set last year, was upped by 50 feet on Monday. The smell of bierwurst was intoxicating to the Queen City faithful, like Wanda Cheatham. Photos: Sausage on Ft. Square "I buy them every month. Not even every month, every time I get some money. Spanish researchers have developed a gourmet sausage made from baby poop. Yes, baby poop. More specifically, they’ve used a strain of bacteria derived from infant feces. Writing in the journal Meat Science, the scientists described how they took 43 fecal samples from infant diapers provided by parent and midwife volunteers. Using three strains of probiotic bacteria they isolated from the dirty diapers, the investigators cooked up several batches of pork that resembled a type of fermented Mediterranean sausage known as feut. Experts said it is not nearly as revolting as it sounds.

LONDON: The bacon and sausage on your plate or those steaming hot pies are increasing your chances of premature death from cancer and heart disease. Processed meat is to blame for one in 30 early deaths, a large-scale study has now found. The EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) study involving 10 countries and 23 centres in Europe and almost half a million people has found that risk of premature death increased with the amount of processed meat eaten by a person. According to the study, even one sausage a day is bad for your health. The researchers...

If you love sausages, hot dogs, and brats, you might be in for a shorter life, a new study suggests. The study analyzed data from half a million men and women, as a part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. It was published in the journal BMC Medicine [PDF]. They found a link between "processed" meat — which includes all meat products, including ham, bacon, sausages; small part of minced meat that has been bought as a ready-to-eat product — and cardiovascular disease and cancer, they report. Also, they found that the more processed meat you eat...

For this experiment, we froze Vienna Sausages using dry ice to see if we could shoot them from a shotgun. Using Federal Multipurpose (birdshot) loads, we cut off the crimps, and inserted the frozen wieners in the shell, starting out with small pieces and ending up shooting the whole thing. The results are unexpected and scary.

this rambler appears to have taken things a step too far - by strolling to a chip shop wearing nothing but boots and socks. The mystery naked man was spotted walking down the middle of a leafy residential road, seemingly without a care in the world. His bold display shocked witness Tim Stevens and his girlfriend Kate, who watched the surprising spectacle as they drove through Enfield, north London. The couple were so amazed by the man's actions that they filmed him on a camera phone. Mr Stevens, 28, said the man, who was about 40, was later seen walking...

Breakfast lovers, beware. A new study found eating processed meats like bacon and sausage could increase your risk for deadly pancreatic cancer. For every piece of sausage or two strips of bacon a person eats every day, there's a 19 percent rise in risk for pancreatic cancer, the study found. "There is strong evidence that being overweight or obese increases the risk of pancreatic cancer and this study may be an early indication of another factor behind the disease," Dr Rachel Thompson, deputy head of science at The World Cancer Research Fund, told BBC News. For the study, researchers reviewed...

A record breaking sausage was the star of the show at the start of the annual autumn fair in Jokkmokk, northern Sweden, on Friday. The sausage, measuring over one hundred metres broke the previous world record, of 80 metres, also made for the same festival back in 1992. Jokkmokk has put itself on the map for its feat, during the annual fair which is now taking place for the 32nd time. Making the giant sausage was no mean feat according to those involved in its preparation. Apparently it took four people some 150 hours to put it together. Magnus Kvickström...
