The city of Pacific Grove began an abatement effort to keep seagulls from public places within the city by using birds of prey. On Sunday, the city said they are using birds of prey to deter birds from "nesting on rooftops, rummaging through trash, littering, and leaving unwanted droppings." This is an effort to minimize inconveniences for locals and tourists, said the city on a social media post. The city says falconers will be on patrol with Harris Hawks and other birds of prey in the coming weeks. The city listed the following benefits for deterring seagulls from rooftops: Keeps...

HAMPTON BEACH, N.H. - New Hampshire Fish and Game has fined the man who said he accidentally kicked a seagull on Hampton Beach. Nate Rancloes was charged with a violation level offense of taking a protected bird during a closed season. Rancloes, a decorated veteran who received a Purple Heart in 2005, told NH1 he was sitting in the sand eating a cheeseburger and fries, when the seagull got to his meal. “I spun around in a circle with my leg out to shoo it away, and unfortunately, did strike the seagull hard,” Rancloes said. “It was a one in...

Dozens of drunk seagulls have been found on beaches in Southwest England after scavenging alcohol, according to news reports. Citing the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Sky News reports that some seagulls have died and others are “seriously ill.” "The birds appear disoriented and confused and struggle to stand,” explained RSPCA vet David Couper. "We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink." DevonLive reports that one seagull “reeking of beer” vomited over firefighters sent to...

Would Pope Francis say anything about this year’s Vatican nativity scene — which was so clearly meant as a nod to the LGBT lobby — when he paid it a visit on New Year’s Eve? He spoke not a word of course, but instead blessed it and chuckled as a few dignitaries, responsible for what some have called a “hideous” and “sacrilegious” crèche, gave him a guided tour. And yet something very eerie and ominous happened that evening. At exactly the same time as the Pope left St. Peter’s Basilica and walked to the crèche in St. Peter’s Square, a...

Why the Announced Test at Uppsala Should Show if Rossi’s E-Cat Claims Are Valid Featured by admin I’m very happy to be able to have another guest post today — this one written by Dr. Johannes Hagel, of Neuss, Germany . Being a physicist I consider the announced test of Andrea Rossis E-Cat at Uppsala as one of the most important of all the series of tests we have been seen so far. This for the following reason: In the announced test for the first time there will be made use of a heat exchanger which transfers the energy of...

SAN JOSE, Calif. -Residents of San Jose, Calif., said thousands of seagulls have descended on the area, making noise and dropping waste all over the town. Thomas and Stephanie Andersen of San Jose said the seagulls appeared at a pair of ponds next to their home in November and the birds have yet to leave, the San Jose Mercury News reported Thursday. "It sounds like you're at the beach," Stephanie Anderson said. "They squawk all day. They get in fights. And it's a sanitation issue." The Santa Clara Valley Water District, which uses the ponds to recharge underground aquifers, said...

Birds falling from sky in west Amanda O'Brien | July 23, 2008 BIRDS are again dropping dead from the sky in Western Australia, sparking fears of a threat to public health, just seven months after more than 5000 birds died from lead poisoning in the regional town of Esperance. Almost 200 seagulls have been found dead in two days in the popular beachside suburbs of Woodman Point and Henderson, south of Perth, sending baffled authorities into a tailspin. Autopsies have failed to explain the mystery.

Aviation researchers at the University of Florida have copied the wing action of seagulls to develop spy drones that can morph shape mid-flight. The toy-sized drones are being developed for tricky urban missions so that they can zip around tight places. They could fly into urban environments to detect biological agents. Funded by Nasa and the US Air Force, the unmanned, sensor-packed craft in development could be on missions in two to three years, say researchers. By watching how seagulls alter their wing shape, and using morphing techniques, the agile craft can squeeze through confined spaces, such as alleyways, and...

Nothing spoils a day at the beach like these two dreaded words: swim ban. Summer only officially started last week, and the Chicago Park District already has hoisted the red flag that renders beaches off limits for swimming 23 times. Trying to pinpoint the source of these bans often turns into an environmental whodunit. We know the weapon is E. coli, bacteria that are typically harmless but serve as a clue that fecal contamination — and the disease-causing microorganisms that go along with it — might be lurking nearby. When E. coli levels get too high, the "No Swimming" signs...

LOS ANGELES, Sept 25 (AFP) - A castaway sailor has been rescued by the US Coast Guard after surviving nearly four months adrift at sea in a crippled boat by drinking rainwater and roasting turtles and seagulls, rescuers said Wednesday. Vietnamese immigrant Richard Van Pham, 62, drifted for almost 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) after his 7.8 meter (26 foot) sailing boat got caught in a storm during what was supposed to have been a simple 35-kilometer (22-mile) pleasure cruise. The thin but healthy survivor, who set out from his home in Long Beach, California to the nearby resort island...
