COWETA COUNTY, Ga. - Four people have been arrested after a brawl at a Coweta County fast-food restaurant including two employees over the weekend, deputies said. The incident, which was caught on camera, left the 65-year-old manager, who was trying to break it up, unconscious. Donniesha Green and Tauzhanae Williams as well as employees Demarius Lovette and Michael West were all charged in the fight. It happened at the Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen on Fischer Crossing in Sharpsburg last Saturday. Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies said they were called there twice to break up fights between employees and their family members. Investigators...

One of the advantages of the present media-driven furor to remove or demolish monuments to the Confederacy is that it is forcing numerous Americans, myself included, to dig deep into the history of the Civil War. And what a strange, convoluted period of history it is! The primary sources are plentiful, rich and deep which makes for endlessly fascinating reading. If the aim of the iconoclasts was to push this period of history even further from the national consciousness, or gloss over it with cherry-picked anecdotes allowing for knee-jerk verdicts, they have failed miserably. For my own part, I have...
  • How a Drunken Colonel Wasted the Gallant 7th Maine at Antietam

Late in the afternoon of September 17, roughly an hour before the sunset that would mark the close of the bloodiest day in U.S. history, a Maine regiment met with a wholly unnecessary fate. Just when the regiments’ soldiers thought they’d made it through the battle relatively unscathed, they got pulled back in with disastrous consequences. At Antietam, due to Union commander George McClellan’s piecemeal strategy, the fighting was conducted sector by sector. (General Phil Kearny once described McClellan as “fighting by driblets.”) The severe topography of the Antietam Valley, featuring a field carved into discrete sections, contributed further to...

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Secret Service visited the office of a Pennsylvania-based refrigeration contractor, Fazio Mechanical Services, in connection with an investigation of the Target Corp consumer data breach, a spokesman for the agency said on Wednesday. Fazio is the largest refrigeration contractor in the Western Pennsylvania region, and Target is one of its clients, according to the Sharpsburg-based company's website. A law enforcement source told Reuters that evidence suggests the hackers stole login credentials from Fazio and may have used the credentials to break into Target's network. The source added, however, that investigators were not sure that...

SHARPSBURG - Antietam National Battlefield is one of the 10 most endangered battlefields in the United States, according to a list released Wednesday by the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT). The battlefield is "threatened with a 120-foot-tall cellular tower that would be visible from all of the battlefield's most famous vantage points," according to a CWPT press release. Monocacy National Battlefield near Frederick, Md., also is on the list, which also includes sites in several states from Virginia to Oklahoma. National Park Service officials were notified in December 2007 of a proposal to erect a stealth cell tower south of...

This Day In History | Civil War September 18 1862 McClellan Lets Lee Retreat from Antietam Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army pulls away from Antietam Creek, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and heads back to Virginia. The day before, Lee's force had engaged in the biggest one-day battle of the Civil War against the army of General George B. McClellan. The armies struggled to a standstill, but the magnitude of losses forced Lee to abandon his invasion of Maryland. The significance of the battle was not Lee's withdrawal, but McClellan's lack of pursuit. When Lee settled into a defensive line above...

Now that it's officially summer, here's my advice to parents who want to continue teaching their kids during the next two months and learn something themselves: visit Civil War battlefields. I probably overdid it with my own children, visiting about 35 in all, but here are my top five: 1. Gettysburg (July 1863) Much as I'd like to make a surprise choice, there's no avoiding Gettysburg's primacy and sadness, with over 50,000 soldiers becoming casualties over three days. Driving and walking this Pennsylvania battlefield explains much: the big rocks of Devil's Den were indeed devilish, and the awesome difficulty of...

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The polarizing effect of the Confederate flag is intense enough to keep it out of most polite conversation in the South this week, even with the spotlight on the divisive symbol because of a remark made by Democratic presidential contender Howard Dean.A Rocky Mount, N.C., flag distributor, after emphatically demanding that neither he nor his company be identified, said he "sells the hell out of" the Confederate flag. "I think any time the issue comes up, people want to buy 'em," he said. "Sort of a way of saying: `We don't care how you do it...

The landmarks at Antietam National Battlefield already include one agricultural feature, the cornfield. Soon there will be another: the apple orchard.Rangers and volunteers plan to plant 350 apple trees this fall to help restore the Piper farm, one of the homesteads on the property, to the way it looked on the eve of the Civil War's bloodiest one-day battle.A nursery in Michigan is supplying eight apple varieties - Baldwin, English Russet, Fornwalder, Gilpin, Jeffries, Maidenblush, McClellan and Northern Spy - for the project, said Joe Calzarette, Antietam's natural resources manager. Those varieties were historically grown in the region but are not...
