Quick, name the greatest film by each of the following directors: Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, David Lean, Robert Altman, Roman Polanski, Kathryn Bigelow, Jonathan Demme. Answers will vary (mine would be: “Psycho,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Nashville,” “Chinatown,” “The Hurt Locker,” “The Silence of the Lambs”), but whatever your taste, odds are that the movies you chose were not written by the director in question. (On my list, none of them were.) There are, of course, countless great writer-directors — Ingmar Bergman, Preston Sturges, Quentin Tarantino, you name it. So it’s not as if it has to be...

The Earth is a pretty bleak place for humans in the new science fiction movie, "After Earth." Set 1,000 years in the future, "After Earth" depicts a future in which humanity is forced to abandon Earth in search of a new home. The remnants of the human race travel to and resettle on Nova Prime — a fictional planet located light-years away from Earth.

Last night, I went to see the new movie written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, "The Lady in the Water." The critics almost universally panned it, and since I am a big fan of his movies since "The Sixth Sense," I decided to go see it. As with all of his movies since "The Sixth Sense," the movie was really well-produced. Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard gave really good performances. The plot, on the other hand, was probably the worst of the movies I've seen by him (my favorites being "Unbreakable" and "The Village" actually). It was definitely...

Walt Disney has lost one of its brightest directors, M Night Shyamalan, to Warner Bros. Shyamalan was also one of its biggest moneymakers. His four films in a row for Disney have grossed over $2 3 billion worldwidein theatrical receipts and video sales. Creative differences over Shyamalan's new project, Lady In The Water, led to the parting, Hollywood's trade papers reported. Even Shyamalan's last film The Village, which was savaged by most critics, earned $240 million worldwide in theaters. Ancillary revenues are estimated to be around $150 million. Shyamalan has steadily built a reputation for making films on medium size...

This is a movie review, a reminder of one of the most reprehensible people in American history, and a well-deserved pranging of James Carville and Lanny Davis. Both of them appeared last week on every TV program in the known universe to decry the criticisms of John Kerry by 254 Swift Boat veterans because “they were not on the same boat.” This is a bald-faced, brass-plated lie in a number of ways. But before we count those up, a review of M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie, The Village, is in order Yes, this will connect up. And so will a...

There are movies with a twist, and then there are movies with a twist and a turn. Occasionally, a movie is written with a twist, a turn, and something else...a twang? Whatever you choose to call it, the device is generally to the movie's detriment. M. Night Shyamalan's The Village has a twist, a turn, a twang, and sadly rounds the corner into absurdity. Roger Friedman, movie critic for Fox News Channel, referred to The Village as being anti-Bush. Its not. His assertion, based primarily on a character named "Walker" and the use of the color red, is just plain...
