According to the National Institutes for Health, chronic sinusitis, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), affects approximately 14.6% of the United States population and is currently the fifth most common condition treated with antibiotics, accounting for up to 22 million physician visits and costing as much as $5 billion annually. New research examines the incidence of people suffering from allergy symptoms who actually have CRS, a finding that could impact how those symptoms are treated. Sedaghat said, "Despite their common clinical symptoms, however, nasal allergies and CRS in many ways have different treatments." The study included 219 participants whose main...
  • Why Serena Williams REALLY had black stickers on her face: Tennis ace is using muscle-healing tape popularised by Cristiano Ronaldo and Tiger Woods for chronic sinusitis to relieve 'pressure, congestion and pain' (but there's NO proof it works)

The ace was seen sporting black 'stickers' on her face, which had many questioning if they were symbolic or a ploy to put her opponent off. It turns out the small strips on her right cheek were medical tape, thought to help keep her sinuses clear and help her breathe properly. The 40-year-old suffers from recurrent sinusitis which, as well as blocking the airways, can lead to headaches, pressure and pain in the face. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is also thought to suffer from the condition and had surgery to clear his sinuses last week. Williams was also seen wearing...

Antibiotic made by nose microbes kills MRSA, say researchers, amid hopes that more weapons in the fight against drug resistance might be found in the body Nose-dwelling microbes produce an antibiotic which kills the hospital superbug MRSA, scientists have discovered. The finding suggests that the human body might harbour a rich variety of bacteria that could be harnessed in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance is a growing cause for concern, with experts warning of an impending “apocalyptic” situation in which patients die following routine surgery because of infections that can no longer be treated. Among the superbugs of...
  • Vanity: Signs of hyperinflation: Wal-Mart

A real sign of hyperinfation can be found in products on the shelf here and there in retail establishments. For example, let's take saline solution nose spray. At Wal-Mart, about two years ago, a 3 oz. bottle was 94 cents. Then, it jumped within the past year to $1.94. Yesterday, while looking at the same bottle, the price was $2.98. And, that's just for a little salt in water! Don't come back at me by saying that's just one item. A LOT of things are beginning to jump up in price. Leave your own examples here via commentary.

A jump into a swimming pool in 2003 changed Travis Robinson's life forever. Somewhere between a belly flop and a tuck, Robinson, then 17, hit the pool in such a way that he injured his spinal cord. He now is paralyzed from the neck down. But in January, he hopes another moment will change his life: surgery. Robinson will fly to Portugal to get a breakthrough surgery at the Hospital Egas Moniz. In the procedure, the scar tissue that surrounds his spinal cord will be removed. Doctors will take tissue that contains stem cells from his sinuses and implant it...

Doctors Remove Leech From Woman's Nose Fri Apr 8, 4:09 PM ET Strange News - AP HONG KONG - Doctors have removed a leech from the nose of a 55-year-old Hong Kong woman after she swam and washed her face in a stream, a medical journal reported. The woman went to her doctor complaining of nose bleeds and an occasional sensation that something was blocking her left nostril, the Hong Kong Medical Journal said in its April issue. Her family doctor noticed a "brownish mass" in her nostril but couldn't remove it because of heavy bleeding, the journal said. The...
