A group of sisters is accused of committing brazen crimes, and it was all caught on camera. St. Matthews police said the Jefferson family stole wallets from hospitals and doctor's offices. Police said the string of thefts has been going on for the past few months. They were able to arrest one of those sisters, Lashonda Jefferson, Tuesday. Now, they're looking for her siblings. Detectives said the Jeffersons made theft a family business. "Keeping it in the family like this is probably pretty rare, but they're all family members," said St. Matthews police Detective Tony Ford. Police said the sisters...

At 30 years old, Sister Danielle Gonzalez is the youngest of 19 nuns at the community of Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon. No lightning-bolt moment brought Danielle Gonzalez to the convent at St. Joseph's Provincial Center, just a gentle and consistent call that only she could hear.  Gonzalez, 30, who grew up in Pequannock, was a senior at the College of New Jersey who enjoyed wearing Jones New York suits by day and dancing at clubs with friends by night. She earned a black belt in karate before the idea of becoming a nun ever entered...
  • Madison State Journal: Bp. Morlino “cracks down” on loony nuns (ACTION ITEM!) – UPDATED

The State Journal of Madison has a breathy article about a recent move by His Excellency Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino. Bishop Robert Morlino cracks down on Madison nuns for espousing ‘New Ageism’ and ‘indifferentism’ Morlino sent a memo to the priests of the diocese of Madison not to allow some loony nuns and a couple of their acolytes to have workshops, do spiritual direction, etc., at their parishes or other diocesan institutions. The memo was, of course, leaked to the press as the chancery mandarins knew it would be… or should have known. The women, who are connected to an...

Nuns wearing the expected black and white habits and sitting backstage of the Republican National Convention are not the only ones who have taken a political stance. A second group, supported by Sister Simone Campbell during the Democratic National Convention, have taken their own stand and are speaking out for social responsibility. The Catholic Church has found itself in the midst of a boxing match as it struggles to gain political advantage. And this time, the group leading the fight is not composed of bishops and priests, but women who are ready to speak their mind. In one corner you...
  • Analysis of NPR’s interview of LCWR Pres. Sr. Pat Farrell: like a 7-y/o’s manipulative obfuscation

Sr. Pat Farrell of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (a subsidiary of the Magisterium of Nuns) did an interview with the liberal-leaning National Public Radio. Carl Olson of Catholic World Report deftly dissected Sister’s interview. Let’s see the first part with my emphases and comments.[Don't forget: The LCWR's leadership claim that, since they are not clerics, women religious don't have to stand up for Magisterial teachings in their apostolates. Therefore, they think they can blur and be silent about important moral and doctrinal issues and align themselves through that blurring and silence with a secular feminist agenda or with...

In Chariots of Fire, two of the elders of Cambridge University invite the young Jewish runner Harold Abrahams to a formal, black-tie luncheon, during which they try to dissuade the upstart undergraduate from using a professional trainer to prepare for the forthcoming Paris Olympics. Abrahams declines to follow Oxbridge athletic orthodoxy and leaves in something of a huff. The Master of Trinity (brilliantly played by John Gielgud) sighs and says to the Master of Caius, “Another God, another mountaintop.” It’s a scene worth keeping in mind when parsing the recent Vatican decision to take into a form of ecclesiastical receivership...

CHICAGO, IL March 15, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On behalf of local residents and the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo, Thomas More Society attorneys demanded that the Village of Stone Park, Illinois, put a halt to construction of a three-million dollar strip club, “Get It,” located several feet from the property line of the Sisters’ convent. “For over 60 years, the Sisters of St. Charles have devoted their lives to teaching the children of Stone Park – service for which they’re now being repaid with a ‘porno palace’ towering over their convent,” said Peter Breen, executive director of the Thomas...

Evanovich's sisters say they know what their brother was doing was wrong, but they say the police should have handled the response because they’re trained to deal with crimes in progress. Johnita Beal says the witness should have dialed 911, "Police could have been easily contacted, easily, and my brother would have been behind bars, or something like that, but no, he's gone now."

CARA Reports on Religious Life Confirm TraditionBy: Msgr. Charles Pope On February 2 the National Conference of Catholic Bishops released a report on Religious life. The study was conducted by the very reputable Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA).The Bishops’ report is interesting and informative for what it says, but also has puzzling omissions in the topics covered, which seem to amount to ignoring the “elephant in the room.”  The “elephant” is the rather obvious fact that religious communities that preserve traditional elements such as the habit, common prayer, communal life, focused apostolates and strong affirmation of...

Secrets of the Habit – A Fascinating Video and Reflection on the Wearing of the HabitBy: Msgr. Charles Pope  The video at the bottom of this post is a fascinating little exploration of the traditional habit of Religious Sisters. The video does not make it clear as  to what Order the Habit belonged. There are many things I learned about a habit I never knew. Things like hidden “saddle bag” pockets, opening crucifixes, symbolism in the pleats, and the purpose of the outer veil. I hope you’ll take time an view a fascinating video.Sadly,  the sister who recounts the hidden...

The Sisters of the Visitation were the fruit of the spiritual relationship between two great saints – St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane Frances de Chantal. In 1601, Jane was a twenty-eight year old widow and mother of four small children. She took a vow of chastity and began a search for a spiritual director. In 1604, she met St. Francis de Sales. They became lifelong spiritual friends. He shared with her his dream of beginning a religious order for women. It would be different from other orders in that poor health or advanced age would not be a...

"The concept of 'one for all and all for one' can get pretty absurd," the late Jerusalem Post staffer and columnist Sam Orbaum wrote about his identical triplet daughters 14 years ago. Orbaum, who passed away in 2002 at the age of 46, went on in the column, entitled "The threeness of it all," to describe life as a father of identical triplets. Not only did he sometimes mix them up, Orbaum wrote in his well-known wry, comic style, but he was also constantly impressed by their tight bond - when for example they stood up for one another in...

The uncloistered sisters are being checked out and they don’t like it. While I’ve only met a few religious sisters, based on my interactions with one of them, her lack of orthodoxy in word and deed, I’m not surprised these women are worried. My guess is that the sisters who wear habits are more orthodox than these folks. In this article, the Church is characterized as misogynistic and distrustful of religious sisters not under direct, ecclesiastic control; my understanding is that the orders are authorized by a Bishop to begin with and said Bishop has control. What am I missing...
