''We've had so much snow and the cold to preserve it,'' Vazzano said. ''We had storm after storm after storm.'' At times the snow was so plentiful it was problematic. The blizzard in late January triggered travel warnings and skiers in the Boston area were shoveling rather than skiing. It was followed closely by four successive weekends of winter storms. Vazzano said a cold spell in February helped preserve the snow but discouraged some skiers. ''When you can't get out of your driveway you can't get to the mountain,'

The winter of 2014-2015 may be a very warm one, but it is not part of a significant trend during the past several decades. It is hard to link a single warm winter to climate change when the recent trends are toward cooling.

Four Slovenian ski officials were suspended Friday for allegedly rigging the results of pop violinist Vanessa-Mae to help her qualify for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Competing in Sochi for Thailand as Vanessa Vanakorn, using the surname of her Thai father, she finished a distant last among the 67 racers who completed the two runs in the Olympic giant slalom. To earn enough points to be eligible for the games in February, she had to compete in official races in Sweden, Norway, Slovenia and Switzerland. The Slovenian Ski Association said Friday it found evidence indicating that the races it hosted...

Before Mikaela Shiffrin even reached her teens, she was like so many small skiers, tugged by a Poma lift up a hill, idle time between runs for adjusting goggles and wiping noses. This was at Burke Mountain Academy, a Vermont school for young, elite ski racers, and Shiffrin was a star there by any measure, with a propensity for seeking the kind of perfect turns that — eventually, linked together, over and over — lead to race wins. She skipped no steps. As she sat back and let the rope tug her up the hill, Shiffrin watched the other skiers...

An initial scan on Monday night showed "an improved situation" and indicated a window of opportunity for a second operation, doctors said. The family took the "difficult decision" to...

An ancient culture in the Chinese Altay Mountains offers a glimpse of how skiing evolved. The hunting party slowly glides into the Altay Mountains in search of elk. It is dead calm, minus 38°F. Just as their ancestors have for millennia, the five men traverse deep, feathery snow buoyed on handmade skis hewed from spruce, with strips of horsehide attached to the bottoms. In lieu of poles each man carries a single wooden staff. Since boyhood, they have learned to master their deceptively crude equipment with exquisite efficiency and grace—the grain of the horsehair providing traction to move uphill and...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama had the kind of Saturday that many men dream of having, playing golf and attending a college basketball playoff game. Midday found him at Joint Base Andrews, the Air Force base on the outskirts of Washington where Air Force One is kept. He teed off at one of the base courses with friends Marty Nesbitt, Marvin Nicholson and Michael Brush. After a couple of hours, enough to probably play nine holes, Obama had his motorcade whisk him to the Verizon Center sports arena, where Syracuse defeated Marquette to advance to the semifinals of the...
