On a summer night in 2017, Chen Zhanqi made a curious find in his lab in China’s Yunnan province. The world’s oldest known spider has died at the age of 43, outliving its nearest rival by 15 years, Australian scientists have reported. Affectionately known as “Number 16”, the female Giaus Villosus or trapdoor spider had been under observation in the wild since its birth in 1974. The arachnid is believed to have survived for so long by sticking to one protected burrow its entire life and expending the minimum of energy.

A spider not seen in the UK for about 50 years has been discovered at a National Trust site in Nottinghamshire. The diamond spider, so-called due to its markings, was presumed extinct, but was found by two trust volunteers on heath land at Clumber Park, Worksop. A family have been left terrified after fearing one the world's deadliest spiders has taken residence in their home after entering Britain in a bunch of bananas. An Australian man posted a Facebook video of a massive spider carrying a mouse up a fridge. The video taken by Jason Womal has been watched more than 10 million times. It shows a Huntsman spider trying to eat the mouse as it drags it up the fridge. A group of campers encountered and trapped a large camel spider at a campground in central Israel. Facebook user Nate Simantov shared a video of the camel spider which was trapped in a plastic container with a rock to weigh it down. "That time we caught a camel spider while camping," Simantov wrote. According to National Geographic, although camel spiders are classified as arachnids, they are actually solpugids and not spiders. While one camper remarked that the large arachnid was "gross," they do not possess any venom and are mostly harmless to humans.
