The Ivanpah solar plant in Southern California killed 6,185 birds in 2015. That includes burning about 1,145 birds with the intense heat coming off its many mirrored heliostat panels, according to a recent report on the government-backed solar project. An audit of how many birds and bats Ivanpah kills every year found “there were an estimated 2500 fatalities from known causes and 3686 fatalities from unknown causes” last year. Of the known fatalities, nearly 46 percent were killed by the intense, concentrated heat used to generate electricity. Western EcoSystems Technology, the firm auditing Ivanpah, estimated about 1,145 dead birds have...

[The following is an excerpt.] Could it be blowing from farm to farm in the dirt? Could determined starlings and pigeons be carrying it into poultry houses on their feet? Is it spreading in feed, or being carried on truck tires? Federal agriculture officials are looking everywhere they can think of for H5N2 bird flu, which has spread to poultry flocks in 14 states and killed or forced the slaughter of more than 39 million birds. Highly pathogenic avian influenza has never spread like this before in the United States, and it's flummoxed the U.S. Department of Agriculture, farmers and...

(CBS/AP) LABARRE, La. - State biologists are trying to determine what killed an estimated 500 birds that littered a quarter-mile stretch of highway in Pointe Coupee Parish. The birds included red-winged blackbirds and starlings. The birds were found Monday along Louisiana Highway 1, about 300 miles south of Beebe, Ark., where more than 3,000 blackbirds fell from the sky three days earlier.

Flocks of starlings are renowned for forming a variety of shapes in the sky. But on this occasion they must have been overcome by vanity – and created a giant starling for us ground-dwellers to admire. The countless creatures created the awesome display by using the winter breeze as the low-setting sun caused the sky to glow red. [snip]
  • Major Bird Swarm Over Sacramento California (cool nature video)

This is a video of a half a million birds swarming over Sacramento California. I just want to know who estimated that there is a half a million. Are they sure there are not a million, or maybe only 100,000 instead? Well either way it is pretty cool, and reminds me of the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, "The Birds".Check out the video of the Birds over Sacrament here These following two paragraphs are from an article at "The Independent", and it is about the phenomenon called a murmuration; Winter must must be coming... because the starlings are flocking. Here are...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The next time the sky darkens with a flock of noisy unwelcome starlings, blame Shakespeare - or, better yet, a few of his strangest fans. Had the Bard not mentioned the starling in the third scene of "Henry IV," arguably the most hated bird in North America might never have arrived. In the early 1890s, about 100 European starlings were released in New York City's Central Park by a group dedicated to bringing to America every bird ever mentioned by Shakespeare. Today, it's more like Hitchcock.

At noon today the MP's had a section of Wilson Road blocked off. It was later announced that 60+ Starlings had all died near the old Anderson Golf Course. The birds were all in a very small area. The post MEDCOM did not find any evidence of toxins, but . . . . . . . .
