Forgive me if this is something everyone already knows but for those who don't I thought I'd share. According to Mississipi state law, if Sen. Trent Lott resigns from the Senate before January 1st, 2003, a special election would be held 90 to 100 days before his departure, and the GOP would stand a very good chance of electing one of their own to replace him. If Lott resigns after January 1st, 2003, Governor Musgrove, a Democrat, would as we have all heard, be able to appoint someone to Lott's position. Presumably he would select a Democrat, returning the Senate...
