Sturm Ruger & Co. is staffing up in order to meet the “historic surge” in gun demand that has depleted its inventory. The Southport, Connecticut-based gun maker has hired 250 employees, mostly in production, since the middle of 2020 to help replenish its stocks as the surge in demand caused combined inventories in its warehouses and distributors to decrease by 86%, or 290,000 units, last year. Retailer inventory of Ruger also remains low. The hiring spree resulted in a 30% increase in production during the second half of 2020. Ruger is continuing its hiring spree today. “We are working hard...

U.S.-based open-end mutual funds and exchange-traded funds reportedly own nearly a third of the stock in America’s two publicly traded gun companies, even as Main Street investors are avoiding such shares. The only two remaining gun-company stocks in the U.S. are Sturm Ruger (RGR) and American Outdoor Brands Corp. (AOBC), owner of gun maker Smith & Wesson. Funds hold about 30% of the two companies’ combined shares, according to data compiled in late October for the Wall Street Journal by fund tracker Morningstar Inc. There are some 201 funds invested in one or both of the companies, mostly small-cap funds,...

Bank of America officially took sides in America’s gun debate Tuesday, announcing it would no longer make loans to companies that make “military-style” weapons. The second-biggest U.S. bank announced Tuesday that it would drop current loan-customers Vista Outdoors, Remington and Sturm Ruger, and blackball any other manufacturer of assault weapons. Bank of America Vice Chairman Anne Finucanetold Bloomberg TV on Tuesday her bank has told those companies “it’s not our intent to underwrite or finance military-style firearms.” “We have had intense conversations over the last few months,” Ms. Finucane told Bloomberg, a network founded by tycoon and gun-control-financier Michael R....

Ruger announced the company is now selling “state compliant” versions of the AR-556 rifle. The new guns will lack some of the basic features of a common AR-15 rifle. Among the changes to this gun are: reduced capacity magazine (10-rounds) fixed length of pull stock (it retains an M-4 style look) non-threaded barrel
  • Gun flight: Smith & Wesson, Ruger quit California over stamping requirement

A new gun law proponents say helps law enforcement has driven Smith & Wesson and Sturm Ruger out of California, and affirmed the suspicions of firearms rights advocates that the measure is really about making handguns obsolete. The two companies have announced they will stop selling their wares in the nation’s most populous state rather than try to comply with a law that requires some handguns to have technology that imprints a tiny stamp on the bullet so it can be traced back to the gun. The companies, and many gun enthusiasts, say so-called “microstamping” technology is unworkable in its...
