Despite the midterm election season looking increasingly grim for Democrats, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) says his focus on the empowerment of individual voters has him in a good spot in a notoriously “purplish” state. “Colorado is a very independently minded, freedom-oriented state, and they don’t want Republicans or Democrats telling them what to do,” Polis told The Hill. “They value accurate information, they value facts, and people should be empowered to make their own decisions, whether that’s marijuana, whether it’s wearing a mask — we’re a state that values freedom.”

July 18, 2005 -- The number of Americans admitted to hospitals and clinics for treatment of methamphetamine and prescription painkiller addictions rose sharply in 2003, federal health officials said Monday. Nearly 117,000 Americans entered hospitals and clinics for treatment of methamphetamine addiction in 2003, a 10% rise from the year before. Treatments for abuse of prescription narcotics like OxyContin rose 12% to more than 48,000 in 2003, the latest year with available data, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Former vice president Al Gore finished a two-year series of policy addresses yesterday by accusing President Bush of deliberately suppressing information about Iraq that would have undermined his case for war.
