A fresh opinion poll from Sweden’s largest statistics agency suggests that the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats have taken the lead over the opposition Moderate Party as Sweden’s second-largest political party. National number-crunching agency Statistics Sweden (SCB) presented the results of its major Party Preference Survey on Thursday, detailing how voters would cast their ballot if an election were held today. The results showed that the government parties, the Social Democrats and the Green Party, would receive 35.6 percent of the votes. The opposition Alliance Parties (the Center, the Liberals, the Moderates and the Christian Democrats) would receive 37.6 percent, the Sweden...

No, this is not satire. On July 29, a gay pride parade is scheduled in Sweden. But, you see, this is no ordinary gay pride parade. This gay pride parade was created by Jan Sjunnesson, former editor-in-chief for the Samtiden newspaper in Sweden, which is owned by the nationalist Sweden Democrats party (for our Canadian readers, think of the Sweden Democrats as being kind of like the Conservatives or the Canadian Action Party, which means that they’re considered “extreme far-right” in Sweden). The parade is scheduled to go through Tensta and Husby – two areas where Muslim immigrants are more...

Background: The anti-Islamist party of the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) recently made huge success in national elections. Despite the fact that Swedes drive around in $35 000 Volvos and build even larger homes for themselves than other rich people like Americans and Australians do, something obviously is rotten in this neighbor state of Denmark and it's not surströmming (google it!). Sooner, it's a failed policy on immigration. Anyhow, this is the analysis of former (Socialist or at least Social Democratic) PM Persson who once expressed doubts about the numbers of non-Western immigrants Sweden has let in. The article: "Former Swedish Prime...

Sweden's Social Democrats and their centre-left allies are poised to return to power after defeating the centre-right government, in a general election that also resulted in strong gains for the anti-immigration party. With all but two voting districts tallied on Sunday, the Social Democrat-led bloc won 43.8 percent of the vote while the ruling centre-right coalition, led by the Moderate Party, gained 39.3 percent. But the anti-immigration far-right Sweden Democrats were celebrating large gains as the party won 12.9 percent of votes cast - more than doubling the 5.7 percent of votes won in the 2010 election. "Sweden friends, party...

Sweden Democrat leader Jimmie Åkesson kept to familiar themes in his summer speech on Saturday, focusing on Islam, immigration and crime. Swedish party leaders traditionally hold summer speeches on their home turf during the holiday season and Saturday was the turn of the Sweden Democrats' Jimmie Åkesson. A crowd of a few hundred people had gathered in Åkesson's home town of Sölvesborg in Sweden's far south to hear the 35-year-old launch the party's push towards the general election in September. Following a sweeping review of the current global conflict zones, Åkesson shifted focus to Islam. "Islamism is the Nazism and...

Sweden's immigration minister has told a newspaper that Sweden needs to tighten rules for asylum seekers and other would-be immigrants to reduce the number of people coming into the country. "Today Sweden is one of the countries that receives the most immigrants in the EU. That's not sustainable," Tobias Billström told the Saturday edition of the Dagens Nyheter newspaper. The minister's Moderate Party, a conservative group and the largest member of Sweden's centre-right coalition government, has tasked Billström with looking at ways to lower the "volumes" of immigrants entering the Scandinavian country, he said. The party wants the country's immigration...

Sweden's largest direct marketing company has joined the national postal service in refusing to distribute a political newspaper containing a caricature of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Earlier this week Posten decided not to distribute SD-Kuriren - a newspaper produced by the far-right Sweden Democrats - in Svedala in southern Sweden. As the newspaper contained a reproduction of Lars Vilks's controversial illustration of Muhammad as a dog, the postal service said that to distribute the publication would constitute a security risk. "We want to protect the safety of our mail carriers. This illustration has provoked reactions that have led to death...
