<p>Anderson, 47, at least the second black candidate to make a historic bid for statewide office this year, slipped by his opponent, state Sen. Rob Smith, in one of three statewide runoffs Tuesday.</p>
<p>He joins Democrat Barbara Blackmon, also vying to become the first black statewide elected official since the late 19th century. Republican Roger Crowder, whose race was still undecided late Tuesday, could be a third.</p>
