More than a year after Gov. Rick Perry announced ambitious plans for a "virtual border watch" in Texas, the project has stalled because of a lack of funding. Perry announced plans for the camera project, the first of its kind sponsored by a state government, in the summer of 2006 during his re-election campaign, making it a centerpiece of his plan to combat illegal immigration. "Enforcing the border is the federal government's responsibility, but Texas will not wait for them to act," Perry, a Republican, said in June 2006. "A stronger border is what the American people want. And it's...

Hello, Everyone - First, I would like to thank all of you who made it to the April Watch, especially those who stayed all month. We were very effective and have seen a great improvement in law enforcement's attitude towards us. Some of the highlights of the watch are as follows: We took down 3 major coyotes. We had a complex hide in a high traffic area that we decided to work for 24 hours, but saw no traffic. Knowing this area was usually busy with traffic, my partner Woody and I decided to give it another 6 hours, beginning...

Our first week was an unqualified success with 93 illegal alien trespassers apprehended. Kudos to John H., he was the most prolific spotter for the week. Many tactics have been used to track, spot and keep observations on these criminal trespassers. The hard work has been fruitful. “Thank yous” to all volunteers that helped make the opening week a first-rate accomplishment. Border Patrol, law enforcement and the TBV relationships can only be stated as the best yet. A transporter/coyote was on the side of the road waiting for illegals when John showed up. The transporter said he had mechanical problems....

The Vice President for Security’s Report I would like to thank all of you who worked so hard this past weekend at the mini-watch. I spoke with Texas Ranger Lt. L.W. and Ranger Sergeants C. and R. via phone, and they asked me to thank you for the assistance last week in the apprehension of a felony suspect. Although M.V. and I helped in a small way, the real credit goes to TBVers T.K. and G.H. When you work with the Rangers, you work with the best. For those of you unable to be there, the TBV now has a...

FALFURRIAS — Police recently responded to a call about a stolen rooster named Harry, but this rural enclave in the South Texas brush country is more like Miami than Mayberry. Brooks County has only 7,600 residents, but the area pulses with illicit traffic attempting to sneak people and drugs past the nearby Border Patrol checkpoint 70 miles north of the Rio Grande on U.S. 281. It poses challenges and extra work for local law enforcement, some of it gruesome. But it also creates a gold mine. By policy, the Border Patrol can't chase vehicles, so a cooperative arrangement has evolved....

New groups plans to concentrate on Texas immigration. Thursday, The former leader of the Texas branch of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps said Wednesday that he and other members split from the national watchdog group last month to form their own private patrol organization opposing illegal immigration: the Texas Border Volunteers. Mike Vickers, a Falfurrias veterinarian and rancher, had been state director of the civil defense corps since March. He said the new group, which he heads as chairman, will focus its efforts in Texas and form a political action committee to influence statewide elections and public policy. The committee...
