I need to keep my land line, but I'm about ready to turn the ringer off which means real calls won't get my attention. This all really started at the change of the year, and may have something to do with the small political donations. Maybe. I don't know. But it starts in the morning and ends in the early evening. One is particular is GE Capital and I do absolutely no business with them. I went throught the "don't call" years ago. Anyone else experiencing this?

Please Note! As I have not had a chance to fully compile the list of every Small Claims Court in the United States yet, please visit this list until such time. If and when I get my list fully compiled, I shall be including a lot of extra data such as links to the applicable court rules and which courts allow the filing of claims online as mine does. Obama today compared his visionary thinking to that of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Gotta check - ok, he was a republican. Couldn't blame Bush somehow. In his call for the need of alternative energy sources he had to put down President Hayes. Said Obama, "One of my predecessors, President Rutherford B. Hayes, reportedly said about the telephone: 'It’s a great invention but who would ever want to use one?'" Obama said. "That's why he's not on Mt. Rushmore." Oh, the inconvenience of actual facts. According to the curator of Hayes' Presidential Center, it turns out President Hayes was right on...

Did you know that some of the fees that you pay on your phone bill may actually be providing free cell service to people with low incomes? A debate started in Pennsylvania after people became aware of the program, which offers a free phone and 250 minutes a month. Here's how at works: The FCC requires all phone companies to pay into something called the Universal Service Fund. Companies get the money they send to the fund by charging you on you bill. Money from the fund goes to companies who provide the free service to help offset their cost....

Every one of us who actually PAY for our phone service (land line or mobile) pay a fee each and every month for each phone line - it is called the "universal service charge". For many years, this "fund" sat unused, but collected by law. Fairly recently the government finally decided to put it to use - so they implemented a program for "low income" individuals to receive a prepaid cell phone with an allotment of minutes each day. Many of us have probably seen or heard the ads on TV, radio, and even on the 'net. I wasn't really...

If you have an old landline telephone in Michigan, one of many outdated regulations requires the phone company to print and deliver a “white pages” directory to your house. In his 1961 short story Harrison Bergeron, novelist Kurt Vonnegut portrayed a dystopian society of enforced equality, where the strong, swift, beautiful and smart had those values degraded by a government that deliberately burdened them with handicaps. Michigan government has devolved to the point where it advances an eerily similar policy toward businesses. Ancient rules holding back phone companies on one hand and a welfare subsidy for filmmakers on the other...

A "Black Widow" suicide bomber planned a terrorist attack in central Moscow on New Year's Eve but was killed when an unexpected text message set off her bomb too early, according to Russian security sources. The unnamed woman, who is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday, intended to detonate a suicide belt on a busy square near Red Square on New Year's Eve in an attack that could have killed hundreds. Security sources believe a spam message from her mobile phone operator wishing her a happy new year received just hours...

Sitting here in my den, I have two ways that I can call you and two ways that I can get a call from you. One of them has been around since the late 1800s and still does pretty much what it did when it was invented. The other is virtually magic in a box — and that box isn't much bigger than a deck of cards. One sits like a weird dusty antique on my desk. It's not pretty. No talented designer has ever bothered to make it museum-worthy. When it rings, I hear the same sound, no matter...

Pat Fleet's "AT&T" is one of the most recognized sounds in the United States. Described as a "mega star" of phone voices by Ted Koppel on ABC's Nightline and affectionately called "Ma Bell" by telephone workers, Pat has been the voice behind literally tens of thousands of telephone recordings since 1981 - speaking to millions of callers daily with coin and credit card requests, explaining services or just thanking them for using AT&T... Her digital studio and online ordering over the internet make recording & delivering voice-overs whenever you need them incredibly easy.

This is for my wife. She's got to upgrade to a 4 gig Iphone (or some such) that has, among other things, email capability. She/we will thus have to have unlimited phone calls, unlimited texting and graphics/pictures, and internet/email. At the present we have AT&T but have to pay extra for texting, pictures and email. What companies/plans would you recommend? thanx so much.

Patterico has posted the court document filed in James O’Keefe’s criminal case bearing the title “Final Factual Basis,” signed by the Assistant U.S. Attorney representing the Government: In the document the government acknowledges that there was NO evidence that the defendants intended to tamper with Landrieu’s phone system. So what does the government do? They attempt to hide this fact from the press: O’Keefe told me last night that Assistant U.S. Attorney Ginsberg summarized the stipulated factual basis in open court, but initially omitted any mention of the paragraph I just quoted. (Consistent with O’Keefe’s statement that the AUSA read...

The final trial of the new new national telephone warning system has been completed in Victoria. The new system, called the Emergency Alert System begins operation next week. More than 50,000 test messages were sent to phones in Torquay, Colac, the Dandenong Ranges and Maribyrnong as part of a trial that began on Tuesday. It allows text messages to be sent to mobile phones based on a billing address, and voice messages to landlines based on location. The Premier, John Brumby, says the system will allow emergency services to send 300 text messages per second, and 1,000 voice messages per...

Angry about how a highly profitable corporation like Verizon is threatening hundreds of layoffs, telephone union leaders and some potentially laid off workers held an unprecedented briefing with the staffs of five members of Congress and both Massachusetts senators. The meeting was convened in Senator Kennedy's office at the Boston Federal Building and was attended by leaders of all the Massachusetts IBEW telephone workers' unions. "Despite being a very profitable corporation, Verizon announced it wants to cut 8,000 jobs nationally and as many as 500 jobs in Massachusetts," said Myles Calvey, Business Manager of Local 2222 and Chairman of the...

YAKIMA, Wash. -- One of the most remote communities in the lower 48 states is finally set to get phone service. The National Park Service is allowing a small telephone company to use public land to bring service to Stehekin, about 100 miles northeast of Seattle in the Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. Stehekin has about 80 year-round residents and is reachable only by boat, float plane or a several-day hike through the wilderness. The phone company, WeavTel, has been pursuing a chance to install telephone service there for years, despite opposition from some residents who don't want it. A...

I went to a wedding in a big church out in the Sandhills of Nebraska this morning, but before leaving on the long drive, I got all set up in the usual standard customary blue three-piece pin-striped suit, when I suddenly remembered something. There was a bonfire on Skins's island the other day, where the primitives were talking about cellular telephones, and Playboy Pedro mentioned that some time ago at a wedding party, he had gotten drunk and dunked his cellular telephone into the wedding punch. Never mind that Playboy Pedro is circa three decades too old for such nonsense;...
