While 2020 will be at or near record-warmth globally, this is not something we should be particularly alarmed about.

With COVID-19 and demonstrations taking center stage in news coverage, it is easy to forget that we are all dying from climate change, anyway … or so we have been told. The recent claim at cbsnews.com that 2020 will likely be the warmest year on record (globally) leads one to ask: So what?

One of the key questions pertaining to the Wuhan cororavirus is whether warm weather will stop the pandemic. President Trump has suggested that it will. He says “a lot of people think that [the virus] goes away in April with the heat — as the heat comes in” and that “there’s a theory that, in April, when it gets warm — historically, that has been able to kill the virus.” Actually, this particular virus is new, so that, strictly speaking, there is no history to rely on. As with so much surrounding the Wuhan coronavirus, we don’t know really know...

The virus that causes Covid-19 may have a temperature sweet spot at which it spreads fastest, a new study has suggested, but experts say people should avoid falling into the trap of thinking it will react to seasonal changes in exactly the same way as other pathogens, like those that cause the common cold or influenza. The study, by a team from Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, the capital of south China’s Guangdong province, sought to determine how the spread of the new coronavirus might be affected by changes in season and temperature. Published last month, though yet to be...
  • From 83° To 13°: That Was The Second Largest Temperature Change On Record!

Thursday evening before midnight, the temperature in Denver dropped to a record low of 13 degrees. The previous day the city came close to a record high with 83 degrees. This difference of 70 degrees in just 2 days is tied for second largest temperature change in Denver since 1872 when records began. We missed a tie with the largest 2 day temperature change by just 2 degrees. That occurred in 2008 when the temperature dropped 76 degrees between December 14 and 15. But what happened this week is certainly a record for the largest temperature swing in October. No...

A polymer that self-destructs? While once a fictional idea, new polymers now exist that are rugged enough to ferry packages or sensors into hostile territory and vaporize immediately upon a military mission's completion. The material has been made into a rigid-winged glider and a nylon-like parachute fabric for airborne delivery across distances of a hundred miles or more. It could also be used someday in building materials or environmental sensors. The researchers will present their results today at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2019 National Meeting & Exposition. "This is not the kind of thing that slowly degrades over...

Advocates of a hypothesis that there is global warming that humans are causing ridicule those who won’t join their club. Yet the problem is that our schools have spread lack of understanding throughout our once-great society. Every institution run by people has been diminished. So let this be a primer if readers want to understand the hypothesis of global warming or try to free a believer from their fever: I. Failing Freshman Statistics The vast majority of the Earth is not being measured by weather stations. As we try to compare temperatures earlier in time, the poor coverage grows radically...
  • 40-year mystery about rising temps on moon solved — and it was probably the Apollo astronauts' fault

An explorer's adage says to "take only photos, leave only footprints." But it seems the footprints of NASA's Apollo astronauts had unintended consequences for the surface of the moon after they landed there nearly 50 years ago. Newly discovered temperature data from the 1970s moon landings, released in the Journal of Geophysical Research in April, reveals that NASA astronauts probably warmed up the moon's surface temperature by as much as 6 degrees Fahrenheit by walking around and poking into the lunar surface. The data comes from so-called heat-flow experiments that were installed on the moon in 1971 and 1972 during...

It is a slam-dunk certainty that American mainstream media will seize upon a recent story in the Los Angeles Times, “Southern California sets all-time heat records amid broiling conditions,” as justification for its continuing support of the contested theory of man-caused global warming. It has already happened with a Yahoo News story claiming that the new temperature records world-wide prove man causes climate change. But there are problems in pursuing that path.First, days that reach and exceed 117-degree temperatures have been known to happen for a very long time in the interior basin of southern California, sometimes referred to as “Death...

Australian meteorologists have been caught changing temperature data from two crucial weather stations. Would it surprise you to hear that they were altering the numbers to show warmer temperatures? Daily Caller: Agency officials admit that the problem with instruments recording low temperatures likely happened in several locations throughout Australia, but they refuse to admit to manipulating temperature readings. The BOM located missing logs in Goulburn and the Snow Mountains, both of which are in New South Wales. Meteorologist Lance Pidgeon watched the 13 degrees Fahrenheit Goulburn recording from July 2 disappear from the bureau's website. The temperature readings fluctuated briefly and...

...He did even worse; he launched a campaign of punitive lawsuits against anyone who criticized him. He has sued Mark Steyn, National Review Online, and climatologist Dr. Timothy Ball. Mann shot himself in the foot with that last. For several years, Mann had refused to produce his data for the court (in support of his own case), claiming that it was “proprietary.” After missing a February 20th deadline, he now finds himself in contempt. Under Canadian law, the court is now required to dismiss the suit. John O'Sullivan goes into detail: "The defendant in the libel trial, the 79-year-old Canadian...

To all the women bundled in sweaters and blankets in your office air conditioning even though it's 100 degrees outside: A recent study says that it's not all in your head. It really IS cold. As many women bundle up against the arctic air conditioning, their male counterparts one cubicle over have no idea what all the fuss is about. It turns out that science says the office A/C may be biased toward temperatures that more comfortable for men — thanks to a formula from more than 50 years ago.

Presented at World Federation of Scientists, Erice, Sicily, 20 August 2015 This is a version of the talk I gave about uncertainty in the global average air temperature record at the 48th Conference of the World Federation Scientists on “Planetary Emergences and Other Events,” at Erice, Sicily, in August of 2015. It was a very interesting conference and, as an aside, for me the take home message was that the short-term emergency is Islamic violence while the long-term emergency is some large-scale bolide coming down. Please, however, do not distract conversation into these topics. Abstract: I had a longer abstract,...

Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) announced that 2015 had the hottest global average temperature ever measured, shattering the previous record held in 2014. The news was widely reported in the media, including the New York Times, which declared that global warming, which had paused since 1998, is back and with a vengeance. The clear implication was that the sooner we stop using fossil fuels and putting all that carbon dioxide in the air, the better

  • Deep Ocean Water Temperature did not Rise in Past Decade, says NASA

A new research has revealed that the deep ocean water temperature has not changed in the past decade. This study is based on the analysis of satellite data whereby the deep water temperature was measured by researchers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The data analysis largely showed that deep ocean water was immune to global warming. Global warming has largely affected the temperature of upper Earth in a manner that it is leading to rise in global temperature, but surprisingly the temperature of deep ocean water was found to be unchanged since 2005.

Record temperatures are absolute – no adjusments needed. One of the biggest complaints about climate science has to do with adjustments of temperature data, such as we’ve recently witnessed from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and have been long discussing here at WUWT about what NOAA does to US and global temperature data via techniques such as homogenization which basically swamp pristine station data with questionable data from stations compromised by UHI and micro-site biases. But, record temperatures are absolute, and there is no possible way that any adjustments can be made to such records. Otherwise, they become meaningless. So,...
  • Faulty and False Global Temperature Readings -- Anthony Watts, Meteorologist

Temperature measurements that are the basis for claims of global warming are defective and wrong. That’s the finding of a scientific team led by Anthony Watts. Watts is a meteorologist, editor of “Watts Up With That,” founder of the “Surface Station Project,” and my personal hero for his style and bravado. When global warming alarmists claim that the Earth is warming or that this was the hottest (year, month) ever, they are totaling up readings from rather simplistic, low-budget, small, automated weather stations scattered around the nation and the world. But about 90% of those weather stations violate the officially-published...

Scientists manage to study the physics that connect the classical the quantum world 10 hours ago Enlarge Principle of the experiment: In the beginning the atom cloud is prepared in an almost perfectly ordered quantum state (symbolized by gray atoms). Over time, this quantum order is lost and disorder spreads through the system with a certain well-defined velocity (symbolized by the mixture of red and gray atoms). This disorder can be associated with the emergence of a temperature. The initial quantum properties are lost only through interactions between the atoms, without any influence from the outside world. How does a...

UK scientists want to redefine temperature using the Boltzmann constant, changing the way in which it has been calculated for over 50 years. The group, working at the UK’s National Physical Laboratory, published a study today that could make it possible to measure temperature much more accurately in the future. The current definition of temperature relies upon the triple point of water – the state at which water can be ice, liquid and vapour in equilibrium – but this makes accurate measurements of extreme temperatures difficult. The team say that the solution is to link the standard unit of temperature,...
