Every once in a while, a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything. Or so said Steve Jobs when he announced iPhone in 2007.But I’m talking about a different revolutionary product. A foundational product that forever changed how everyone on this planet gets to where they need to be. Today, I’d like to tell you about the Etak Navigator, a truly revolutionary product and the world’s first practical vehicle navigation system. Here’s a picture of it:At the time, it was considered out-of-this-world. This is what Silicon Valley’s San Jose Mercury News said about it:The Etak Navigator launched 39 years (!) ago...
  • Mapping autonomously: The cost of helping a self-driving car get around the city

In the highly competitive race to get self-driving cars to the market, most companies hold their secrets close. But when it comes to helping those cars figure out where they are on the road, some experts are ready to open up. Argo AI, based in the Strip District, and Aptiv, based in O’Hara, publicly released some of their own data sets earlier this year in an effort to further advancement in the field. The companies shared parts of their own maps of cities where they are testing self-driving cars, including Pittsburgh. That may seem strange considering the abundance of applications...

Requesting help from Fellow Freepers. Major screw-up. Flew in from S. Korea and tried to update my TOMTOM GPS in order to help me find my way around the Sumter, SC area. To make a long story short....I think I corrupted and/or deleted files actually embedded on the GPS. Now can't get it to do anything. Does anyone have a link to software that can restore the GPS to factory settings? I'd be happy with that. Or, maybe a POC of someone who specializes in restoring GPS devices? Thought they would be plentiful but I guess not. The GPS is...

You are bidding on a TomTom Go 700 This was my wife's, may her knicker draw be infested with the fleas of a thousand Camels... The Go 700 was once the top of the range Sat Nav from TomTom, with an internal Hard Disk Drive instead of the traditional SD Card, and had full Bluetooth and Wireless capabilities. I bought this for the back-stabbing harlot, some four or five years ago, before she met Nigel with the Little Penis, and it cost me over £400... As bless her cheating little heart, she gets lost driving out of the street...perhaps without...
  • Satnav maker TomTom 'helps' police set speed traps (update)(Netherlands)

Satellite navigation system maker TomTom indirectly sells details of motorists’ driving behaviour to the police for use in determining where speed traps should be placed, the AD reports on Wednesday. Almost half the country’s police forces use this method of deciding where to put cameras and speed checks, the paper says. The company’s terms and conditions make it clear that information gleaned from the sat nav systems can be sold to other companies. TomTom sells the information to an intermediary which in turn sells it on to the police. A spokesman for TomTom told the Telegraaf the company was unaware...

You can now get Star Wars character voices for your TomTom. Check out this video of Darth Vader in the recording studio as he records directions for the TomTom. I’m not the biggest Star Wars fan and I’m especially not a fan of Darth Vader. However, I love amazing advertising and marketing buzz. And to think, I didn’t even know it was Star Wars Day. Didn't even know there was such a thing.

While the Knight Rider GPS by Mio lets drivers live out their boyhood fantasies, it may also bring on a slight superiority complex thanks to the refined tones of William Daniels. TomTom users won’t have that problem now that iconic cartoon everyman Homer Simpson is onboard to guide them to the nearest bar or donut shop. Officially licensed by Twentieth Century Fox the Homer Simpson voice skin is performed by Homer Simpson himself, Dan Castellaneta, and features special words or wisdom to accompany the turn-by-turn instructions. Such gems include, “Take the third right. We might find an ice cream truck!...

TomTom and Microsoft have settled the patent litigation. Here's TechFlash's coverage. According to the Microsoft press release, TomTom will remove functionality regarding the FAT patents within two years, which is no big deal, frankly, and in the meantime, they are covered "in a manner that is fully compliant with TomTom’s obligations under the General Public License Version 2 (GPLv2)": Peter Spours, Director of IP Strategy and Transactions at TomTom N.V., stated: “This agreement puts an end to the litigation between our two companies. It is drafted in a way that ensures TomTom’s full compliance with its obligations under the GPLv2,...
  • Is Microsoft finally taking Linux to court?

Once a year, Microsoft president Steve Ballmer, would proclaim that Linux violated some of Microsoft patents. Then, he wouldn't do anything about it. Now, perhaps, he has. In the U.S. District Court in Seattle, Microsoft sued Tom-Tom (PDF Link) on the ground that Tom-Tom's in-car navigation devices violate eight of its patents. At least three of these patents, concerning file management, reference TomTom's Linux kernel implementation. This is the first time that Microsoft has ever filed a Linux patent suit over Linux, despite its multiple claims. That said, according to Todd Bishop, "Microsoft says open-source software is not the intended...

We take a visit to the gardens during this growing season. We have a pic and a video of a baby rabbit. Okay, so it's not a movie of legend, it is cute. The gardens grow wonderfully but we have issues with the growth. For a jungle does not a garden make. I received a most wonderful gift for my recent birthday and I must say, God Bless America. Because with just a tap on the screen I can get anywhere in my surround. A great find for the navigationally challenged. A product review of a TomTom, with pics.
