An American tourist was shot and killed while apparently being robbed in a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific Coast that has become popular with surfers and Hollywood stars. Douglas Bradley was killed Thursday in the hotel zone of Ixtapa. He was on Christmas vacation in neighboring Zihuatanejo and would have turned 50 the next day. The city of Imperial Beach in San Diego County announced Bradley’s death on Friday. He was the city’s director of finance.

A U.S. Navy sailor was sentenced Friday to two-and-a-half years hard labor for raping a Japanese tourist in Okinawa. Justin Castellanos, 24, who was based in the district's Camp Schwab, pleaded guilty in May to raping the 40-year-old victim in his hotel room in Naha, south Japan on March 13. The serviceman had found the woman, who was drunk and asleep in the hotel lobby, and taken her up to his room where he assaulted her. 'I am sorry for what I have done,' he told the court. 'My heart is filled with regret,' Stars and Stripes reports.

North Korea announced Friday that it has detained a U.S. citizen who it says entered the country as a tourist in April and broke the law. SAN FRANCISCO -- A suspect wanted in connection with the killing of a German tourist near Union Square in 2010 has been arrested, authorities said Friday. Devante Laws, 21, was spotted in Hayward on Thursday and taken into custody by members of a task force led by the U.S. Marshals Service.
