The evangelists of this global means of communication would claim it’s responsible for catalyzing a host of revolutions within otherwise repressed dictatorships, while its critics might describe it as a meaningless echo chamber which others use to exploit journalistic credulity. Even as its user base declines and it struggles to find a viable revenue model, it can’t be denied that Twitter exerts an outsized influence, if only upon the narratives crafted by the mainstream news media. A Congressional candidate in Virginia’s 8th District has posted a photo on Twitter that incidentally includes a glimpse of his pornography tastes. Mike Webb initially ran as a Republican for the 8th District seat, which covers Arlington and Alexandria and is considered safely Democratic. He lost the nomination, though, and is now running as an independent, though he is, to say the least, unlikely to win. Webb published a post on his campaign page Monday that included a screenshot of his computer desktop. Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump is using Twitter to criticize the media. In more than a dozen different tweets, the New Yorker called out the The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN and The Hill. Trump tells his more than eight million Twitter followers that the media is “on a witch-hunt against me. False reporting, and plenty of it – but we will prevail!”
