Rep. Denver Riggleman in 2018 won the then-open district, stretching from the North Carolina state line 250 miles up to Washington, D.C., exurbs in Fauquier County, Virginia. But unlike the bulk of freshmen, who cruise to reelection after winning their seats the first time, Riggleman is locked in a nasty Republican renomination battle against Bob Good, a Campbell County supervisor and former athletics official at Liberty University . . . “He comes out as pro-gay marriage. He comes out as pro-drug legalization, and he limps down the stretch of the nomination after it becomes revealed that he's a purple progressive...

With Republicans expected to make gains in congressional races across the country Tuesday, four vulnerable Virginia Democrats are fighting to avoid being swept away by a GOP wave.... In the Fairfax-based 11th District, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly (D) is trying to fend off Oakton businessman Keith Fimian (R). In the 5th District, Rep. Tom Perriello (D) welcomed President Obama to Charlottesville Friday for his uphill race against state Sen. Robert Hurt (R). In the Hampton Roads region, Rep. Glenn Nye (D) is struggling to hold on to the 2nd District seat against auto dealer Scott Rigell (R). And in Southwest...
  • McKelvey considers legal action against Perriello for false advertising

    emailed statement from Jim McKelvey
October 25th, 2010 Press Release STATEMENT OF JIM McKelvey: I am quite frankly appalled at Tom Perriello's recent desperate attempts to split the Republican Party, and his vain attempt to get conservatives in the 5th District not to vote for Robert Hurt. Unlike what Tom Perriello would like us to believe in both his goofy mailers and ridiculous television ads, Jeff Clark is not the alternative, and Congressman Perriello is no conservative. Robert Hurt and I may have had some differences in the past, but we are both focused on the same goal for our country's future. In the latest...

Former Congressman Goode will endorse Republican nominee By BRIAN MCNEILL Published: June 9, 2010 Former GOP congressman Virgil H. Goode Jr. says he will endorse Republican nominee Robert Hurt in the race against U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Ivy. Goode, a lawyer from Rocky Mount who represented the 5th District in Congress for six terms, lost his seat to Perriello in 2008 by a margin of only 727 votes. “Yes, I plan to support the nominee,” Goode said today. “I think he has a very good chance of beating Tom Perriello.” Hurt, a state lawmaker from Chatham, beat out six other...

The Jefferson Area Tea Party is rallying against Fifth District Congressman Tom Perriello. Thursday afternoon, the group held a protest at Perriello's office on Second Street in Charlottesville. They are upset with Perriello's support of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009. The group says the bill, which still being debated by the Senate, is an energy tax. Those people who support the initiative say it reduces the amount of carbon that electric utilities, oil refiners, and certain industries can emit. Perriello voted for the so-called "cap and trade bill", which passed the House 219 to 212.
