During an interview with Milwaukee’s TMJ4 News on Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris answered a question on demands for protections for the unborn at the point of viability while still allowing some abortion by stating that “the government should not be telling women what to do with their bodies.” TMJ4 Chief Political Reporter Charles Benson asked, “Wisconsin has an 1849 abortion ban law in place after the Supreme Court decision was reached on Roe v. Wade. Prior to that, it was a 20-week ban on abortion. So, my question for you is, what is your position on protecting reproductive rights...

A wind energy company named Avangrid has been in the process of developing a massive offshore wind farm called the Commonwealth Wind project, working with the support of the state of Massachusetts for several years. When completed, it was to be a 1,200-megawatt energy source. A second offshore project from Mayflower Wind was to produce an additional 400 megawatts. But now, the companies behind both of these projects have asked the state to put the plans on hold. The reason given was that the projects are “no longer viable” under the current conditions and they will be unable to move...

These same considerations that Casey relied upon nearly 30 years ago to justify affirming Roe v. Wade provide the precise basis to overturn Casey today.Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case considering the constitutionality of Mississippi’s Gestational Age Act which, with some exceptions, bans abortions after 15 weeks. While in granting certiorari the Supreme Court limited the question on appeal to “whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are unconstitutional,” Wednesday’s arguments focused more broadly on whether the high court should overrule Roe v. Wade and Casey v. Planned Parenthood. Even...

Since the day he announced his candidacy, Texas Senator Ted Cruz has been making the case that he's the conservative candidate who can win the Republican nomination. It doesn't matter if he is speaking to a group of homeschool kids and their parents, Cruz closes by telling his audience about how much money his campaign has raised and that he is positioned to win. Now as we enter the final phase of the 2016 caucus campaign, Cruz has a handful of prominent Iowa endorsements to go along with all of his campaign cash. The big three statewide Republican elected officials,...

Recognizing that prior to "viability" a fetus experiences pain during an abortion, and that the Arizona statute does not prohibit abortions necessary for the health of pregnant women, the court rejected a challenge to the law.By Order released on July 30th, Federal District Judge James A. Teilborg declined to hold an Arizona statute limiting abortions during and following the twentieth week of pregnancy unconstitutional. State restrictions such as those imposed by Arizona, but after the beginning of the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy, had been said to be permissible in Roe v. Wade almost forty years ago. Although I consider the...

We all know that the GOP candidates are vying for what could be called the most prestigious "Toilet Bowl" in the world -- the "Toilet Bowl" within the White House! I suppose we could label this "season" as the "POT-US SuperWhiteHouse 'playoffs'" -- POT-US representing the acronym of "President Of The United States." Each year, the NFL plays a 16-game pre-playoff regular season. Well, what if... ...the 2008 primary season -- at least the races Mitt Romney competed for beyond his "home turf" -- constituted Romney's "regular season?" Romney's 2008 'Road' Record: 0-16 (Now 0-17) Sizing up only Romney's races...

Last week’s column asserting that the president is unelectable has triggered strong responses. Democrats, in particular, seem to think my judgment is premature. It strikes them as ridiculous that anyone could make such a “bold prediction” so far in advance of the 2012 election. Hey, that’s what we do, as seasoned political professionals, as pollsters. But I must stress that I am not so much making a personal prediction as drawing an informed conclusion based on all the numbers available. I do this in each election cycle for other candidates, and it’s time to make the call on President Obama.

The group says Tiller and a colleague broke state laws on late-term abortions but also provided women a substandard level of care. The latter complaint is what is most germane for the State Board of Healing Arts, which licenses and oversees physicians in the state.Operation Rescue relied on medical records from Michelle Armesto, a Topeka resident, for its complaint. The researchers note, however, that new technologies now in development promise to make ethanol a truly "green" fuel with significantly less environmental impact than gasoline. The analysis, appearing in this week's issue of Science, attempts to settle the ongoing debate over whether...

days-old human embryo preserved outside the womb isn't a person under the Arizona law that allows lawsuits for wrongful deaths, the Arizona Court of Appeals has ruled. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit filed by a Phoenix-area couple against the Mayo Clinic, accusing it of losing or destroying some of their fertilized eggs. The couple had asked the Court of Appeals to expand the definition of "person" under the wrongful-death statute to include embryos with the potential to be viable, but the court declined, saying it's a matter for the Legislature to decide. A 20-year-old Arizona Supreme Court ruling on...

Leading abortion clinic backs 20-week limit By Becky Barrow (Filed: 04/04/2005) One of Britain's largest abortion clinics wants to cut the upper limit for terminations to 20 weeks because advances in medical science mean that the babies are "potentially viable". Marie Stopes International, the largest provider of abortions outside the NHS, said yesterday it wants the controversial 24-week limit - the highest in Europe - to be cut by four weeks. Dr Tim Black, chief executive of Marie Stopes International, which performs around 60,000 abortions each year, said: "Public opinion is in favour of abortion but falls off quite quickly...

Sterrett -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE PAST FEW months have not been kind to feminists. There was John Kerry’s stunning admission that life begins at conception, followed by several additional stories, each of which punched a new hole in feminist propaganda. That Sen. Kerry believes life begins when a man’s sperm fertilizes a woman’s egg is commendable. This position may mark the first time in his career that he’s actually flip-flopped for the better; Kerry opposed the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, and has been a reliable pro-abortion legislator for years....

People are always commenting how kids are growing up faster and faster these days. Last week presidential candidate Joe Lieberman let us know that this process begins before birth. "Lieberman says it's time to rethink Roe vs. Wade," said the headline. Sounded promising, almost believable, given Lieberman's reputation for integrity and religious faith. But the letdown wasn't long in coming. Lieberman explained that advances in medical science are pushing back to earlier and earlier stages the point at which a baby in utero (fetus, to you Democrats) can be sustained outside the womb. This means, said Lieberman, that what we...

<p>Back in January, the abortion rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America held a dinner in Washington to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision.</p> <p>But the event was far from celebratory, with speaker after speaker warning that a woman's right to choose is in grave danger. "For the first time since Roe vs. Wade, anti-choice politicians control the presidency and both houses of Congress," NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman said in a typical speech. "The Supreme Court is one vote away from dismantling the right to choose."</p>

Within the rarified ranks of the nation's public editors -- you can count us on a full complement of toes and fingers, with a few extra digits for good measure -- a major player is about to arrive. After years of contending such a position was not necessary, The New York Times announced last week it is about to hire its first public editor. The search is on, the Times said, for the right person to perform the job on a one-year, "experimental" basis. Thank you, Jayson Blair, for the Times' epiphany on the road to renewed credibility. <p>It should by now be clear that a sustainable Mideast peace can only be built on two firm foundations. First, Israel's right to exist behind secure borders must be recognized. Second, a viable Palestinian state should be created. Though all these achievements appear unreachable right now, it's the viability part that looks the hardest at this point.</p>
